Lovely.
The first thing I tell my students is to draw from colored photos (or nature/life).
Never to desaturate them for black and white.
The idea is to learn to see the values (brightness values) while disregarding the colors or textures.

A lot depends on your tools here. A set of simple graphite pencils or the presence of black and white paint is one thing. Another thing is when you use the whole palette.
Answer me, as an artist, in what way is it more difficult to express the idea that you want to put into your painting? Color or BW?
Hmm... not going to go there :) Or I will...
It really depends.
Color is useless if all the rest does not work (structure, values, edges, transitions, composition, texture, contrast, etc.).
On the other hand, color grabs attention.
Using colors means to take a complicated thing (drawing), and make it more complicated :)
To express things, there is no advantage to any medium (color or b&w), it depends on the subject and style.
As you seen, sometimes with wood burning, color does not add. In other cases it does.
But after all, the rainbow consists only of color, wherever it is :))
Some Impressionist canvases also consist of "meaningless" color spots. Our consciousness itself complements the forms and meanings.
It's hard to disagree :)
I do not disrespect color. Actually it is one of the things I like, and it took me many years to master.
For a painting to work, a painter should know how to draw first. Of course there are some styles that you do not need to know how to draw, like abstract, but I do not know anything about it.
Creating an abstraction that expresses your thought is no less difficult than drawing a traditional drawing. It has its own laws and regulations.
I can indifferently pass by a picture painted according to all the rules of painting, but which does not affect my emotions or thoughts.
But I can get stuck for a long time in front of a meaningless set of lines, spots and colors... they may have strong energy and emotions, and intuitive images in the apparent chaos of lines.
However, I agree, among the abstract there are a lot of frank daubs like: I am an artist, I see it that way" ;)
===================================
I guess, I do not know much about abstract.
Although I like realism and fine art, the art I consume is only by super masters.
Meaning, computer games, films, tv shows, animation, comics, etc.
In other words, the draftsmen that have to learn for years and give birth to new and magical worlds for me to explore.
I teach the basics, and it takes a year to learn, so if my students want to get to the level of the people in the industry, they have to practice a lot.
