You are right the best thing is observe and find what is best. Sometimes even beautiful work but looks not really right because of dis-balance or some empty areas too much in one place and less in other. Nowadays of course it does not matter but still for our eyes and mind we still want to find something that pleases our senses and not irritates. The description of composition is very good tip for newcomers, I find it very helpful.
