Imaginarios: "La apertura de la Gran Exhibición, 1851", de Eugène Lami [ESP / ENG]

Élise Fairchild-Ederlezi contempló con emoción la escena que estaba presentándose en el improvisado escenario del Palacio de Cristal, sede del magno evento de la Gran Exposición de los Trabajos Industriales de Todas las Naciones en aquél 1 de mayo de 1851. Entre los asistentes vio a algunos amigos suyos y de su familia, como la escritora Charlotte Brontë y el científico Charles Darwin, a quienes saludó y charló momentos previos al evento organizado por el príncipe Albert, esposo de la reina Victoria.

Sin duda se trataba de uno de los eventos más importantes que ha tenido el Imperio Británico en el campo de la ciencia; en él se encontraban participando un crisol de culturas, desde los mexicanos hasta los persas. Cada nación había enviado un invento, una creación que representaba su estado dentro del desarrollo industrial internacional. Inventos interesantes, en su opinión.

Élise Fairchild-Ederlezi watched with emotion the scene that was taking place on the improvised stage of the Crystal Palace, venue of the great event of the Great Exhibition of the Industrial Works of All Nations on that May 1st, 1851. Among the attendees, she saw some friends of hers and her family, such as the writer Charlotte Brontë and the scientist Charles Darwin, whom she greeted and chatted with prior to the event organized by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.

Without a doubt it was one of the most important events that the British Empire has had in the field of science; a melting pot of cultures were participating in it, from the Mexicans to the Persians. Each nation had submitted an invention, a creation that represented its status within international industrial development. Interesting inventions, in her opinion.

Sobre la obra

Inauguración de la Gran Exhibición en Londres, Primero de Mayo de 1851 es una obra pictórica elaborada en 1851 por el pintor, litógrafo e ilustrador francés Eugène Lami, un artista conocido mayormente por las ilustraciones de novelas como la famosa Manon Lescaut de Antoine Francois Prévost.

En esta obra, el autor nos muestra a detalle la inauguración de la Gran Exposición de los Trabajos Industriales de Todas las Naciones, o la Gran Exposición de Londres como se le conoce coloquialmente. Aunque apenas se distinguen, en el plano de fondo podemos distinguir a la reina Victoria de Inglaterra (posiblemente la quinta dama del lado derecho, a juzgar por la banda que lleva encima apenas perceptible), junto con dos infantes, posiblemente sus hijos más pequeños. Adelante de ella, ataviado con un uniforme militar rojo en posición de lectura, se encuentra el príncipe Alberto de Sajonia-Coburgo-Gotha, consorte de la soberana.

Entre la muchedumbre que rodea el escenario, siempre en el lado derecho, vemos a un emisario chino ataviado con el traje de enviado imperial; tras él, con vestiduras amarillas, se encuentran cuatro representantes de España. Virando un poco más a la derecha encontramos a emisarios de la India y, posiblemente, de Turquía. Ahora bien, se dice que a la inauguración asistieron grandes personalidades del mundo de la ciencia y la literatura, como Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, y Charles Darwin, a quienes probablemente Lami haya retratado en esta pintura, aunque fuese de espaldas.

On the artwork

The Opening of the Great Exhibition, 1 May 1851 is an artwork made in 1851 by the French painter, lithographer, and illustrator Eugène Lami, an artist best known for illustrations to novels such as Antoine Francois Prévost's famous Manon Lescaut.

In this artwork, the author shows us in detail the opening of the Great Exhibition of the Industrial Works of All Nations, or the Great Exhibition of London as it is known colloquially. Although barely distinguishable, in the background we can see Queen Victoria of England (possibly the fifth lady on the right, judging by the barely noticeable sash she wears), along with two children, possibly her youngest children. In front of her, dressed in a red military uniform, in a reading position, is Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, consort of the sovereign.

Among the crowd that surrounds the stage, always on the right side, we see a Chinese emissary dressed in the costume of an imperial envoy; behind him, dressed in yellow, are four representatives of Spain. Turning a little further to the right we find emissaries from India and possibly Turkey. Now, it's said that the inauguration was attended by great personalities from the world of science and literature, such as Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, and Charles Darwin, whom Lami probably portrayed in this painting, albeit with their backs turned.
