I have already had a couch completely reupholstered once. An old favourite. Restoring it was much more expensive than buying a new one and, unfortunately, in the end the piece was beautiful again, but no longer really comfortable.

And you must have reupholstered it because you liked the comfort factor. But why was it uncomfortable after? Was it the choice of fabric, or did the upholsterer make changes or not get the suspension right?
No, no, no... The upholsterer was great, he had even advised me not to attempt this restoration.
Part of the cosiness of this particular couch came from the fact that it was so worn. After the refurbishment it was pretty, no question. But tightly sprung and, to my mind, sterile. It was no longer my couch ;-))
I totally get it! Especially the "tightly sprung part."
I feel the same way about not wanting to change my mattress. We had a few potty-training mishaps with the kids, and I’d scrub it clean with every solution under the sun: online and offline! So many memories. Plus, over time, it’s become so comfortable, like a memory mattress in its own way. Hehe
So yes, I really understand you!
