Better Living: The Many Nuances of Trauma

in WORLD OF XPILAR4 months ago

Most people on this planet have suffered some kind of trauma.

We're used to thinking of "trauma" in terms of phrases like "blunt trauma to the head," but there are also a myriad variations on psychological trauma in our world.

Psychological trauma is often ignored or understated because there's nothing visible to indicate the trauma. And then it is recognized, we're often limited to viewing it through the somewhat narrow lens of PTSD from "something horrible happening" to a person.

Every human being is unique and individual, and we are each "wired" in our own unique way.

One person might be severely traumatized by coming face-to-face with a swarm of bees when opening the barn door, while the the next simply thinks "Uh oh, bees!" and just closes the door again.

Although that's an overly simplistic example, it does serve to illustrate the breadth of possibilities.

Regardless, unaddressed traumas have a way of affecting our lives in ways we might not be consciously aware of. Moreover, they can be the reason why we avoid taking certain steps to better our situation, even when we are well aware that those steps would positively improve our world in a positive way.

Addressing and healing trauma can be a very complicated — and often painful — process.

The human brain is an amazing organ that literally is capable of blocking out traumatic experiences from our memory through a psychological process often referred to as "Dissociative Amnesia."

It doesn't mean that we've actually forgotten that something horrible happened, but our brain is protecting us from remembering the events.

It's important to remember that when we block out trauma — or the severity of trauma — it's not about being in denial, it's about protecting ourselves from pain.

What is also important is to remember that in most cases, by the time we reach the point of being ready to examine and heal past traumas, the base situation that caused the trauma has usually passed, and we will be working in a safe clinical setting.

The first step towards healing is often to simply establish that "what was" no longer applies, and certain limiting behaviors no longer necessary as protective tools.

Healing our traumas is an important part of living healthy and fulfilling lives. Even though the healing process can be both long and challenging, it is essential to our well-being.
