Hello Steemians. I am new to this community and I am happy to be able to participate in this contest.

I just read this book HOW TO TALK TO ANYONE by Leil Lowdes. I am going to review it by mentioning some of the most profound things I found.

Smiling. This is an underrated skill however, the author mentions that this is very important especially when greeting each other as, first of all it creates a good first impression and also creates warmth in that the person you are interacting with finds you more welcoming and therefore is eager to talk to you.

Leil encourages that smiles have to be genuine and one tip he gave is that one should smile slowly.

Eye Contact.
Eyes are said to be windows to the soul. Eye contact is really important because it makes one assured that they have the other person’s attention. However, he says too much eye contact may be come off as rude in certain situations like interactions between men.

He gave an example where he went to a party with female friend who had just been laid off from work and was single. As he was talking to her various men kept approaching where they were standing and smiling at her, however she would smile briefly and turn back.

A small boy, came and tugged at her dress, she turned fully and knelt down to talk to him. She gave him all her attention and eventually the boy left.

Leil told her, she was supposed to smile and turn fully ,possibly touch them lightly on the arm to encourage them to join the circle. When she did as she was told to the next person that tried to join their crew she was able to get a lovely date for the night.

Leil reported that these techniques have been helpful to salespeople, those seeking romantic relationships etc.

Posture . Body language is important because it shows your level of receptivity of people before you even begin talking to each other. The trick for posture that he shares with **holding your head high, chest out. He advises that if one is really nervous, they should visualize being confident as it actually helps when it comes to time for the interaction.

Leil shares some tricks that seem ordinary though seem really helpful;
Reading Newspapers . This helps one be abreast with what is going on therefore giving one many points of conversation.

He mentioned that there was an employer who made it a must for her employees to read newspapers everyday before work and there was a huge increase in profits as customers were praising her saying her employees held good conversations.

In instances where one is at a gathering and would love to get to know particular people one can ask the host to introduce them. However, if the host is busy with other guests, one can ask the host for the person’s name and what he does or his interests. Therefore one can approach with good conversation points to start with.

Asking someone to tell an interesting story they have told you before. This tactic he mentions is used when you want to step away. For example he was a director on a ship and he was responsible for making parties where captains had to interact with clients.

He did this successfully when an accident happened on the boat however the injured party was treated successfully due to the captains’ help thus he would say “...(name of Captain) please tell them that story when that accident happened and you managed to help the victim”.

However , in such instances the person telling the story must come out as a hero. The story should not be embarrassing or sad.

Truthfully, it is such a good read and would encourage it for anyone that has social anxiety or just wants to improve their communication skills.

Thank you for reading.
