Addictions

Our bodies have been made such that it always wants what it feels is best for them. Things that keep it lively and feeling good, our brain thrives on this which is why your brain would want more dopamine release than serotonin. Naturally, any activity we like tends to release a lot of feel-good hormones which our bodies love, this makes us want more of whatever it may be, and when care is not taken addiction sets in.

Everyone has his or her addictions because what may cause you to feel euphoric may not be the same thing that would cause me to feel euphoric. Dopamine is quite powerful and when we have enough flooding our system we feel so on top of the world. Some people get things from music, either all kinds of music or a specific genre, for some people is doing sports or watching movies, for some is going out there to drink or party or have other kinds of fun, for some people is the thrill of the chase, for some is sex, for some is porn.

The point is your addiction could be anything at all however just as the saying goes, "too much of everything is bad", because of which addiction could cause us more harm than good. Some too are generally not a good source of dopamine release, eg. pornography for which we would have to make efforts to find another source of dopamine that would replace it for us. The negativities surrounding porn are numerous and could seriously harm your health and your sexual life if you don't quit.

Now aside from this, other addictions such as music when overdone could just cause damage to your hearing, alcohol could damage your liver when taken in excessive amounts, and movies may occupy all your time and keep you from being productive. I hope you are getting the point I am trying to arrive at? So yes when we let addictions take hold of our lives even the good can easily become very bad.

Overcoming addictions is not easy, it takes lots of commitment, dedication, help from external sources, somethings therapy, medications to help with withdrawal symptoms, etc. But if only we do not give up then we can overcome. Make an effort today, and learn to do things in moderation before dopamine steals the good in you. Stay safe.
