Everyone has some dreams of traveling. Some people dream of traveling around the entire world, while others dream of visiting some specific places like Singapore, Indonesia, or Malaysia while some dream of going to places like Italy, France, or Spain. Since childhood, I have had also many dreams of exploring different places around the world, physically visiting and experiencing about their history, and visiting famous landmarks, exploring nature and meeting people around the world

But if you ask me what my dream destination is for 2024, only one name comes to mind, and it is the American Heart Association. Why, you ask? Because for the past three months, I have been deeply immersed into researches and working tirelessly. I have submitted almost around 20 to25 cardiology abstracts in the AHA, four to five gastroenterology abstracts in the ACG, and four to five abstracts in WCP, of my favorite field, that’s psychiatry. For the past three months, I have spent day and night working in the university library, working tirelessly from dawn to dusk, completely engrossed in research. I am putting in all my effort, hoping that at least one of my research proposals gets accepted.

As a third-year undergraduate medical student at Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, I understand the immense value of research. Not just in our country, but everywhere, research holds significant importance. I have a passion for cardiology and a keen interest in surgery, but my true calling lies in interventional cardiology. I am deeply interested in cardiovascular health, and I am particularly fascinated by the technical and procedural aspects of interventional cardiology, such as angioplasty and stenting. The immediate life-saving impacts these procedures have on patients' health drive my passion. I also aspire to contribute to the development of new procedures that better reduce mortality in cardiac patients, address body patient conditions, and build patient relationships professionally.

I have very high hopes that in sha Allah all 30 of my abstracts, or research ideas, will be accepted, published and allowed to be presented at the conference of these respective fields. The American Heart Association conference is the largest and the well-known medical conference in the world and the United States. Presenting an abstract here is a dream not only for every medical student but also for many senior doctors, residents, and even the fellows and the attendants working in the USA. As a third-year undergraduate medical student, it would be one of my greatest achievement if my abstracts are accepted and I get the opportunity to present them there.

One advantage of the American Heart Association conference was that I managed to submit 20 abstracts almost for free. Normally, someone would have to pay $100 for each abstract submission, which means if they submit 20 abstracts, they would have to pay $2000 to present them at the conference. However, because I am from a third-world country and an international country, Pakistan, I had the opportunity to submit them without any fees. On the other hand, for the ACG (American College of Gastroenterology) and WCP (World Congress of Psychiatry), I had to pay $100 for each abstract submission. With a total of nine abstracts, that amounted to $900. I covered some of this cost myself, while my friends and some senior doctors helped with the rest.

I am honored to be the first from my university and Pakistan to reach this milestone, submitting more abstracts in a single year than anyone before

I am confident in my abilities and proud of my academic achievements. In my last medical year, which was my second year, I topped my university. I have also been in communication with many research fellows in the USA who have guided and assisted me in the abstract submission process.

But here's a bit of a problem. Even if all my 30 abstracts are accepted, it will be very difficult for me to go to the United States. As an undergraduate medical student, I can't afford the expenses of traveling there. I am trying hard to find a senior doctor or anyone interested in medical research to sponsor my work so I can present them.

Because the cost of going there is very high – flights, visas, and living expenses for a month – which I cannot afford. Additionally, my university may not allow me to stay away for so long to attend three conferences and present abstracts. But it is my dream to attend and present in the conference in 2024. This could be a huge opportunity for me. I am making every effort to find a senior doctor or someone to sponsor me so I can go and represent Pakistan, showing that we also have intelligent and dedicated students who can excel given the right opportunities.

If I am unable to attend by the end of the year when the conference takes place, I will have to hand over my abstracts to someone else who will present them on my behalf. I hope, Inshallah, that some way will be found, and I will visit America to present all of my work. It would be a life-changing moment for my career as a future doctor in the United States of America. As mentioned in my previous posts, I am into two fields – cardiology and psychiatry. Wish me good luck. Even if I cannot make it to the AHA, USA at the end of October, I will not give up and will do more research so that I’ll achieve this milestone very soon.

Thank you for reading. If you can support or know someone who can, please reach out. Your help can make a significant difference in fulfilling this dream.
