Why is it a big deal to all Filipinos specifically Visayan people upon hearing about the resort construction in the middle of the beautiful Chocolate Hills? Let me tell you the insights about Chocolate Hills.
The Chocolate Hills are a natural wonder located in the province of Bohol in the Philippines. They are a geological formation consisting of at least 1,260 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers. The hills are mostly conical in shape and vary in size from 30 to 50 meters in height.
What makes the Chocolate Hills unique is their appearance. During the dry season, the grass covering the hills turns brown, giving them a chocolate-colored appearance, hence the name "Chocolate Hills." This phenomenon has made them one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Philippines.
The exact formation process of the Chocolate Hills is still a subject of debate among geologists. One popular theory suggests that they are the weathered remnants of ancient limestone deposits that were uplifted by geological forces and then eroded by water and wind over millions of years.
The Chocolate Hills are not only a geological marvel but also a significant cultural symbol for the people of Bohol. They are featured prominently in local folklore and legends, with various stories explaining their origin. One popular legend tells of two giants who engaged in a fierce battle, hurling rocks and boulders at each other until they became friends and left the landscape dotted with the hills.
Visitors to Bohol often include a visit to the Chocolate Hills as part of their itinerary. There are viewing decks and platforms where tourists can get panoramic views of the hills and take photographs. The best time to visit is during the dry season when the grass turns brown, giving the hills their chocolate-like appearance. Additionally, the nearby Chocolate Hills Complex offers amenities such as restaurants, souvenir shops, and recreational activities for visitors to enjoy.
To let you know, I went there last April 2023 with my friends. Luckily, the rainy season just started, so we witnessed the brown chocolate-like appearance. Hopefully, the beauty of Chocolate Hills will stay as it is for the next hundred years.
Aside from Chocolate Hills, there are other tourist spots we can recommend to our co-travelers. We will discuss the other recommended places in Bohol. Let's discuss it in my next blog.
