Travel Memories : Delhi
I believe certain old memories, especially the travel experiences, have always been an important part of life for us. When we go to a new place, not only do we enjoy them, but the memories associated with those places register themselves in our hearts and minds.
Today I will share with you some of my old travel memories of my own city, which are from the Mughal and other rulers of the Indian capital, Delhi.
I often write about many famous places I visited in Delhi in my different posts. The places I will be sharing today include some places in Chandni Chowk. Chandni Chowk was once the most popular market during the Mughal era. It still is, but now this market is very crowded.
Chandni Chowk area
This area is famous for sidewalk markets and also for the delicious food available on the sidewalks and small shops in the narrow lanes for instance "Paranthe Wali Lane". The Paranthe mean the fried Indian bread stuffed with different vegetables. Chandni Chowk is also famous for gift items, jewelry shops, and clothes, as well as fake and real electronic items, including watches from Switzerland and cameras from Japan.
As I said, it will be difficult for the buyer to differentiate between real and fake, so I suggest not buying these items from the sidewalk vendors.
Again, Chandni Chowk is one of the most crowded markets in the world, right in front of the Red Fort, where you can buy anything at a very reasonable rate, but to get the right price you must be a master at bargaining, especially if you are a foreigner.
Other famous buildings right opposite the main gate of the Red Fort across the road in the Chandni Chowk area are the famous temple of Gauri Shankar, the Jain temple, and Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, and Jama Masjid is also not very far away.
Photography is prohibited inside the temple so I can give you a shot from the main gate of Akshardham Temple.
The most popular places to visit in Delhi include Jantar Mantar, Akshardham, Hauz Khas, Delhi Zoo, Red Fort, India Gate, Connaught Place, Lotus Temple, Humayun’s Mosque, Gurudwaras, Sikh religious places, Birla Mandir, Chhattisgarh Temple, and Boat Club, Kalka Temple.
But this is a long list, so I will tell you about few of these in this post:
Other Famous Tourist Places in Delhi
Delhi is one of the most visited cities in India, with hundreds of places of tourist interest. Let me tell you about one of the most famous places in the city, the Red Fort, which was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1648.
Dear Steamians, I have posted some articles earlier too that contain details of my various trips to India. I had promised to tell you some other places of tourist interest, but I was very busy with my other activities in the past days, so it took some time to write this post, but now I am presenting some other areas and places in this post.
Did you know that Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and another ruler of Delhi, Qutubuddin, were among the most famous or fond of creating architectural beauties in different parts of their empire? For example, Qutub Minar, Taj Mahal, and Red Fort. These are some examples that they gifted to the world.
But Shah Jahan, known for his love for marble and red stone buildings like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Taj Mahal, which Shah Jahan built in memory of his wife in Agra apart from Delhi, was a bit ahead of everyone else. If you are interested in history, you can enjoy the light and sound-based show presented every evening at the Red Fort. You should visit these buildings and places while in Delhi.
Other famous buildings in Delhi, including World Heritage Sites, are Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, Iltutmish's Tomb, Purana Qila, Zoological Park, and Jantar Mantar, which are places worth visiting to know the glorious past of the Indian capital, Delhi. Each building listed here is spread over a vast area and has its own historical significance.
If you want to enjoy boating in the heart of the city, it is in the same area just outside Purana Qila and Zoological Park. Other famous buildings nearby include Humayun's Tomb, Safdarjung, Pragati Maidan, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan (President House), Mughal Garden, and Lotus Temple, a place of worship of the Bahai community, and Akshar Dham Temple.
I suggest people visiting Delhi should check the tourism center for detailed information on tourist places.
