THE FANDANGO DANCER
His song was the Gota,
His dance was the Vira.
They called him "the Fandango man."
But his true name,
When he danced, danced,
Was not a name of a carnation,
Nor was it the name of a rose.
– It was that of a mysterious flower,
That shed its petals, shed its petals...
And there was a crystal in his gaze,
And there was a crystal in the air
When that fandango dancer
Lingeringly swayed to dance!

And there was a crystal in the wind,
And there was a crystal in the sea.
And there was, in thought,
A flower yet to be shed...
Fandango dancer! Fandango dancer?...
(I don't even know what name to give him...)
His raised arms
Seemed to hold unknown meanings –
Paths of wings in the air...

When he danced, danced,
He was not the leaf of a carnation,
Nor the leaf of a rose.
He was a mysterious flower
That shed its petals, shed its petals...

Young women came from Areosa
To dance with him...
And young women came from Afife
To dance with him.

Then the shadows of the bodies,
Like treacherous flames,
Intertwined, and the dance
Set the ground ablaze with bonfires...
And the shadows formed hedges...
The movement made them bloom...
The dream, the night, the desire...
Ah! Beauties of deception!

And the shadows intertwined...
The bodies, no one knew
If they were bodies, if they were shadows,
Or if it was love, hiding itself...
