PHILOSOPHER'S STONE
They do not know that dreaming is a constant of life, as concrete and defined as anything else, like this gray stone on which I sit and rest, like this gentle brook in serene ripples, like these tall pines that sway in green and gold, like these birds that cry out in drunken fits of blue.
They do not know that dreaming is wine, it is foam, it is yeast, a lively and thirsty little creature with a pointed snout that burrows through everything in perpetual motion.
They do not know that dreaming is canvas, is color, is brush, base, shaft, capital, ogival arch, stained glass, cathedral pinnacle, counterpoint, symphony, Greek mask, magic, the alchemist's retort, a map of a distant world, compass rose, the Infante, a 16th-century caravel, the Cape of Good Hope, gold, cinnamon, ivory, duelist's rapier, embroidery frame, dance step, Columbina and Harlequin, flying machine, lightning rod, locomotive, a ship with a festive prow, blast furnace, generator, atom split, radar, ultrasound, television, a rocket landing on the lunar surface.
They do not know, nor even dream, that dreaming commands life.
That whenever a man dreams, the world leaps forward and advances like a colorful ball in the hands of a child.
