TO LIVE ALWAYS IS ALSO TIRING
Living always is also tiring.
The sun is always the same, and the blue sky
is either blue, clearly blue,
or gray, black, almost green...
But it never has an unexpected color.
The world does not change.
Trees bear flowers,
leaves, fruits, and birds
like green machines.
Landscapes don’t transform either.
No red snow falls,
there are no flying flowers,
the moon has no eyes,
and no one will paint eyes on the moon.
Everything is the same, mechanical and precise.
On top of that, men are men.
They sob, drink, laugh, and digest
without imagination.
And there are miserable neighborhoods, always the same,
Mussolini’s speeches,
wars, trances of pride,
race cars...
And they force me to live until Death!
Wouldn’t it be more human
to die for a little while,
from time to time,
and then start again,
finding everything new again?
Ah! If only I could kill myself for six months,
die upon a divan
with my head on a pillow,
confident and serene knowing
that you were watching over me, my love from the North.
When they came asking about me,
you’d reply with your smile
where a heart burns in melody:
“He killed himself this morning.
I won’t resurrect him now for a trifle.”
And then you’d come softly,
watching over me, subtle and careful,
step by step, lest you wake
Death, still a girl, in my arms...
