Star-Dragon - My Monthly Map Melee Entry (a Hive Exclusive contest)

Check out the Monthly Map Melee contest in the Worldbuilding Community!

I've been meaning to get to this since it was first announced, and I finally dedicated some of my evening to this contest! It was an absolute blast to make, and I wanted to do it with a fantasy flavor, so my entry is for the contest is similar in some respects to Spelljammer in some ways - namely because it doesn't follow standard Sci-Fi spaceship design and is instead based off of a creature (In my case, a dragon head).

So, please let me present you: The Star-Dragon!

Main Deck:

On the main deck is:

  1. The Engine Room - The heart of the ship, powered by the crystallized heart of a dead god, this is what provides Star-Dragon the ability to traverse space, inner-atmosphere, and even underwater environments if it needs to. Complex magic and technology has been woven together to make use of the wild and unstable power of the heart.

  2. Access to the Forecastle and Sterncastle - Double as break room for the crew to lounge in and get together.

  3. Same as 2 - Stairs and makeshift break room.

  4. Kitchens and mess-hall - The Star-Dragon has nearly two dozen crew members, three of which are cooks who keep the rest of the crew well-fed and with full happy bellies.

  5. Cargo Hold (Main Level) - One of the primary cargo holds on the ship.

  6. Incinerator/Garbage Disposal - Got Space Waste? Burn it up and scatter the ashes to the void!

  7. Stairs to the Lower Deck

  8. Armory - The Star-Dragon isn't always in friendly space, or on friendly worlds. A well stocked and maintained armory keeps them sailing the stars for one more day.

The Sterncastle and Forecastle

The Sterncastle (which is at the back of the ship, directly above Main Deck rooms 1, 2, and 3), is also the 'cockpit' of the vessel. Like a sailing ship of old, its primary navigation is done by a wheel, with two separate desks directly behind it for various other functions the Captain might need.

The Forecastle is located physically directly above Main Deck room 8, and acts as the main weapons platform for the ship. The enchanted Scorpio artillery piece might not seem like a lot of defense, but it packs a deceptive punch! With a variety of enchanted ammunition types, it's served the Star-Dragon and her crew well, seeing them through many close calls.

The Lower Deck

The Lower Deck is almost exclusively dedicated to sleeping quarters, and contains two crew dormitories (Rooms 2 and 3), as well as the Captain's Quarters (Room 1). The final room - Room 4, is the secondary cargo hold for long-haul items that don't require being accessed often, as well as storage of the crew's personal items that can't be kept in the dorms.

And, finally, here we have a final shot of all of these floors together:

As you can see by the terrible job I did mirroring the shapes, this was all done by hand, lol. It was a blast to make!
