God said in Deuteronomy 8:3 that “People do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD." (NLT)1

In teaching us how to pray Jesus says pray like this, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), what is He talking about? Is it the yeasted bread that we eat? Or a daily provision of anything that we do eat? I believed Jesus meant far more than just bread or food. When you study scripture carefully, the Bible says that bread symbolizes four things.

1. Bread symbolizes the basics needs of life. Each time you pray saying, “Give us this day our daily bread,” you don’t sit around relaxing yourself, waiting on God to suddenly send you money without you doing any work. You have to work!

You are right if you say, "God says, “I will supply your needs". What you seem to forget is "You have the responsibility to gather the supplies.” That’s God’s way of meeting needs. He supplied the manna, but the Israelites had to go out and pick it up daily. Working is part of God’s plan or design for your life. It builds character.

Proverbs 14:23 says, “Hard work always pays off; mere talk puts no bread on the table”. 2

2. Bread symbolizes God’s Word. The Bible makes it clear that, “People do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3 NLT). We need to feed on the Bible every day because it is our spiritual food.

When the Israelites were walking to the Promised Land, God Occasionally dropped manna from heaven for them to eat because they had nothing to eat. God was giving them bread to show them that they needed more than physical food to live; they needed to depend on him at all times. Real life comes only when you learn to feed on every word of God. God did not create us to only be about the feeding of our flesh; you need to feed the spirit also.

3. Bread symbolizes fellowship for God’s family. Lok at 1 Corinthians 10:16, “Is the bread which we break not a sharing in the body of Christ?” (AMP)

Bread is a symbol of fellowship for the family of God. If You're created by God, then you need God’s people in your life! Whether or not you have a physical family, you need to to belong to God's family, else you will be like an orphan. A Bible believing church is God's family. And God made it to be a place of fellowship for his children. There's no child of God without a church family.

4. Bread symbolizes salvation. When Jesus was instituting the Lord-Supper, He chose bread to symbolize His body broken on the cross for our sins. Every time you eat the bread and drink the wine or juice, it is a reminder of how much God loves you and gave His only begotten for your sins. Jesus did this so that you can go to heaven.

Beloved, whatever your need is today, it maybe a physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual, I want to urge you to depend on God to meet that need for you. You can simply pray this prayer with me, “Father, give us this day our daily bread.” Then trust God to take care of your needs whatever there maybe.
