Why I will still call teaching a noble profession, despite the undervalued, underpaid and overworked nature of the profession.

I am Mnkong Emmanuel Saah of the north west region of Cameroon. And I would like to share an experience with the steemit space Community friends the reasons why teaching profession is considered a noble profession.
A teacher by definition is a person, who provides education; one who teaches or instructs. The role of a teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out at a school or other places of formal education.
Broadly speaking, the function of a teacher is to help students learn, by imparting knowledge to them and by setting up a situation in which students or pupils can learn effectively. But teachers fill a complex set of roles, which vary from one society to another and from one educational level to another.

Teachers play vital roles in the lives of the students in their classrooms. Teachers are best known for the role of educating the students that are placed in their care. Beyond that, teachers serve many Other roles of their classrooms, build a warm environment, mentor, and nurture students, become role models, and listens and look for signs of trouble. As a matter of fact teachers play a protective role. They are taught to look for signs of trouble in their students. When students behaviours change or physical signs of abuse are noticed, teachers are required to look into the problem. And they must follow faculty procedures when it comes to follow up on all signs of trouble. Infact teachers work is not only to pass or impart knowledge to the students. They overwork themselves for a renumeration that isn't commensurate to tasks and role they play. This shows how undervalued, teachers are when compared to other professions in terms of salaries

Considering the less attention given to teachers, why is teaching still considered a noble profession. Anything that is noble demands attention but that's not the case with teaching, yet it is called a noble profession. Teaching has been termed a noble profession because it entails giving knowledge to students and inspiring them for higher professions. A teacher teaches all the professions. He needs to be updated because only then can he impart knowledge. Teachers mould the minds of the next generation, shaping minds, nurturing potential, and inspiring students to leave the classroom.
Abdul Kalam once said that teacher shapes the character, caliber and future of an individual. If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me"

My experience as a teacher at the secondary school:
In the late nineteenth ninties, I started teaching as a young person in the secondary school not for the money per say. However I had a number of needs ranging from house rents, food, clothing, medications etc. But i still enjoyed the profession because it was all fun imparting knowledge to students. Along the path the journey became more challenging. I was given a post of responsibility, first as a Senior Discipline Master and then the dean of studies. I also handled some responsibilities; such as departmental head, sport master and social master. These did not affect my effectiveness and efficiency as a classroom teacher. Teaching a foreign language to newbies of the language was so challenging. But my approach made things easy for me and it became fun imparting knowledge to the students. And with the Introduction of the teaching of this second official language became effective in the basic education of my Anglophone counterparts of the Cameroon educational System, I was moved to the basic education.

My years at the basic education as a language teacher:
Teaching at the basic education was more challenging than in the secondary School. Teaching the whole school, starting from class one of children as young as five years old made the work more complex and challenging with little renumeration. I kept on going because teaching to be was more of a vocation, even though I needed money for my complex needs in the complex situation. Classroom management was also so challenging especially In the level ones and two of the education system, couple with the congested curriculum and above standard learning material especially for level one. And to succeed, I made teaching more practical than theoritical to create attention and interest. And teaching became more fun, and this method kept us going. I felt so proud to watch them complete the course and leave for secondary schools. And today I feel so fulfilled finding them occupy various prestigious jobs or professions in the society. Is this not why teaching is called a noble profession? Today, that I am now I a journalist of the print Media (PJ), out of the teaching core, I still feel nostalgic about the the teaching profession "the noble profession".
Let's value the teachers and give them their proper place in the society. I have been there, and know just how complex and challenging the teaching profession is. More love and courage to the teachers of the noble profession.

Sort:

Teachers are rare gems. Teaching is a noble profession like it or not, not because I'm into it but because I know about the value of teaching.

Whatever anyone becomes today, he or she was taught by a teacher. Well written, best wishes sir.

Thank you so much my dear teacher. I appreciate your compliment and above all your resilience in the teaching profession that remains the noblest one. Happy Teacher's Day celebration please!

Thank you, I wish you same.
