Chess game; How to move the pieces

Intro.
Lets talk CHESS. Chess is one of the oldest games recognized games in the world. It's not just exciting but also a game of strategy and planning that is easy to learn and enjoyed by any age group.

Its played on a 8×8 board, with 64 squares and 32 pieces. The whole idea of the game is go checkmate the king and when that happens, its game over . In chess, both players have identical pieces and each take turns to play until the game ends. Now let's look at the diff pieces.

1. THE KING
Though the king is the most important piece of the board, it's not the most powerful piece. It can only move 1 square at a time in any direction(forward, backwards, sideways, diagonally)

2. THE QUEEN
Hello queens😂, this piece may not be the most important but it's the most powerful piece. She can move forward, backward, sideways and diagonally like the king but as far as she wants not just one square. Sadly, the queen can't jump over other pieces.

3. THE ROOK
This is the 2nd most powerful piece in chess and can move up, down, left, right as far as it wants. Like others, it can't jump over other pieces.

4. THE BISHOP
The bishop is similar to the rook and queen as it can move as far as it wants but only diagonally. Interestingly, the bishop stays on the same coloured square from start to end of the game. Like the rooks and knights, each player gets 2 bishops. They never block each other since they each work on separate coloured squares.

5. THE KNIGHT
This is a fun piece in chess which doesn't move in straight lines like the others. Rather, it moves in some sort of L shape( 2 squares in one direction then 1 square in the other direction). The knight is the only piece that can cross over other pieces. Another fun fact is the knight switches colours on each move meaning it moves from a light to dark square and so on.

6. THE PAWN
As humble as these pieces may look, they are somewhat powerful and together are the soul of chess. Let's look at the different pawn rules; first, they can only move forward 1 square at a time unless it's the pawns first move where it can decide to move 2 squares forward if no one is blocking it. Secondly, like others they can't jump over other pieces. Thirdly, pawns are the only pieces that can't move backward. Lastly, though they can only move forward, they can only capture diagonally 1 square away.

7. PAWN PROMOTION
Although pawns can't move backwards, if they successfully reach the other end of the board, they get promoted to whatever piece you choose with exception to the king or any piece that has already been captured(imagine having 2 queens🤗).

SETTING UP THE BOARD

Now that we know all the pieces and how they move, let's set up the board in a few points.

  • The light square goes to the bottom right corner.
  • Start by placing all 8 pawns on the 2nd row.
  • Place the rooks on the corners of the first row.
  • Next to the rooks, place your 2 knights.
  • Next to your knights place the 2 bishops.
  • The white queen always goes to the lighter square and the black queen goes to the darker square.
  • Lastly place the kings on the empty squares.

We are DONE, remember by tradition the white set makes the first move.
