Microbiology, What is it and what do they do?
I am much excited to write and share with you all another science lesson today. Today's lesson would be about microorganisms. The study of microorganisms falls under microbiology and as a matter of that we would first look at what microbiology is referred to then we then enter into the microorganisms.
This topic is a broad one but we will try to briefly touch on them separately. Without much ado, we would start with today's lesson.
Microbiology is a branch of biology that deals with the study of microorganisms (organisms that are not visible to the naked eye unless with a powerful microscope). These organisms are very tiny to the extent that unless with the aid of a powerful microscope that one can use to see them. These organisms can be generally termed ubiquitous meaning that they can be found in every natural habitat. There are several groups of microorganisms and they include viruses, fungi, algae, helminths, bacteria, and protozoa.
Microbiology is used in Agriculture to produce chemicals that help in combating crop diseases.
Microbiology helps to produce drugs in the pharmaceutical industries
Microbiology also helps in the production of food and drinks
Microbiology helps Doctors to easily isolate and diagnose pathogenic organisms to aid compact diseases.
Microbiology helps an environmental scientist to come out with a solution of treating our environment without causing much harm.
Here I would be sharing with you four areas as a microbiologist degree holder you can specialize in. They include the following;
Environmental Microbiology:- this involves the study of the harm and benefits that microbes or microorganisms have on the environment.
Food Microbiology and Aquatic Microbiology:- this also involves the study and use of microbes or microorganisms to produce food and drinks in industries.
Epidemiology and Public Health Microbiology:- this specialization involves the study of how diseases are being spread and distributed as well as how to control and prevent them.
Agricultural and Veterinary Microbiology:- this type of specialization also involves the study and use of microbes or microorganisms to control pests and diseases in both plants and animals. It also helps in the high yield of crops and livestock.
The following includes some of the branches of study under Microbiology;
Parasitology: this involves the study of parasites
Bacteriology: this involves the study of bacteria as the name suggests
Virology: similarly, as the name suggests, this involves the study of viruses
Immunology: this also involves the study of the cellular immune response to agents of diseases as well as allergens.
The following includes some of the functions or work of a microbiologist;
Microbiologist helps in the control and prevention of specific diseases in the health industries. They also help in diagnosing the diseases as well.
Microbiologists aid by studying and understanding the functions of microorganisms in the climate and as such helps in the harness of microbes in the environment.
Microbiologists also help in the food industries by making sure that the foods are safer to be consumed.
Microbiologists help in creating or developing new technologies in finding solutions to controlling diseases and infection.
I know this question must be popping out in your mind once I started to write about this topic and I would list some job areas as a degree holder in microbiologist can do for a living. They include the following;
Job Opportunities | Job Opportunities |
---|---|
Pharmacologist | Clinical Research Associate |
Research Scientist | Food Technologist |
Microbiologist | Technical Brewer |
Medicinal Chemist | Biotechnologist |
Biomedical Scientist | Water Quality Scientist |
Microbiology is an important branch of biology that is very important in controlling the good health of humans. I encourage biology students to specialize more in the field of microbiology so that in the near future we can have numerous microbiologists in our various communities to help solve health-related problems in our environment as well as the other sectors such as health, agriculture, etc.
I would end here and I would be bringing you another episode of my science lesson which would be about Bacteria. Watch out for my next science lesson episode. Thank you all for your time and attention.

This is yet another interesting lesson from you dear brother. Its very detailed and comprehensive. You even went ahead to mention opportunities one can enjoy venturing into this line. Am almost tempted to become a science student 😀
Thanks for the compliment bro. Yeah Science is really interesting and I think we have to dedicate some time to learn a little bit of it.😊
