Do You Want To Make Faster Decisions

FOMO

Have you heard of FOMO? - Fear Of Missing Out. When you feel everyone is doing something better than you're doing right now.

FOBO

Well there is something you need to be more aware of when it comes to making decisions and that's FOBO - Fear Of a Better Option
The world is full of options. Whatever you want to buy, you are spoilt for choice.
I'm sure you have suffered with FOBO. Perhaps when you were looking for a holiday, choosing a house to rent, buying a shirt, choosing a lipstick or picking a place to go for dinner.

You can't make decisions when you have FOBO and you waste precious time and energy searching and searching for exactly what you want.

How do you overcome FOBO?

Be aware of the stakes involved and it will help you with the decision making process.

In life we have No Stakes, Low Stakes and High Stakes decisions.

No Stakes

An example of a No Stakes decision is deciding what to watch on TV. There are no consequences. To help you decide you can come up with 2 movies and flip a coin.

Low Stakes

There are consequences to these choices, but not big ones. These are routine choices like:

  • buying a printer
  • booking a hotel
  • renting a car

You can outsource this decision to someone else. Ask for a recommendation and take their advice. This will clear your plate of another task.

High Stakes

These have bigger consequences. For example: - which house should I buy? - What job shall I go for? For these kind of decisions you have to get it right.

How do you get it right?

  • Decide what really matters to you about the new job.
  • Get the facts
  • Collect data on options so you can be confiedent you are making the right decision.

FOBO comes when you are trying to choose one from a group of acceptable options. So you should:

  1. Go with your gut feeling and choose the one you believe is at the top of your list.

  2. Compare other options with the top one, one by one.

RULE

When you eliminate an option, it's gone forever. You'll end up with one final choice.

THEN

The power to decide is a gift. Make the most of it!
