Taq Kasra - The Ctesiphon Arch - How to Lose a War
Taq Kasra - The Ctesiphon Arch - How to Lose a War - Modern combat is challenging. Conquering the military side of the fight is hard enough. For countries like the US, the other elements of the fight are nearly impossible. Dr Richard Ledet and Pete A Turner discuss the Ctesiphon Arch and the multiple ways the US failed to leverage this archaeological asset.
The arch is a former Persian palace and dates back over 1000 years. In most cases UNESCO protects, preserves and studies a tell laden site like Taq Kasra (Arabic for Ctesiphon). Taq Kasra is the largest freestanding unsupported adobe arch in the world-as long as it lasts.
The arch itself is a cultural magnet in Iraq. Located in Iraq's Baghdad province, yet, it's not alone. Colocated with the Salman Al-Farsi mosque, and what's left of a local museum, hotel and casino.
For Sunni, Shia and Kurds, this site unites Iraq. To further illustrated the point, a number of counties have offered to help preserve the site...including Iran.
