Eczema - Treating it Successfully with a Natural Approach

Over the years as a homeopath, I have run many Eczema Clinics. Eczema impacts on the whole family, not just the child who is suffering. Sleepless nights are so common when a family has a child with Eczema in the house. Generically, the itch becomes insane at night, due to the heat of the bed usually.

I want to share a few cases of using homeopathy for Eczema.

These are cases that show some of the really good remedies that are needed for treating Eczema. People can get caught up thinking the remedy Sulphur is the best remedy for Eczema. I’ll let you in on a little secret – it’s not!

1. The ‘Scalded’ Baby

This was one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen. I was taken aback when I saw this baby girl. Her skin looked like she had been dipped in scalding water. The reddest of the red I’ve seen, dryness beyond belief, and insane itching. She was scratching the skin off herself. Her sleep was drastically affected – as was Mum and Dad’s. They were getting up over and over, every night, trying to help their little baby. The mum was positive it had started within 48 hours of getting the BCG vaccine, and then spread like wildfire.

I prescribed TUBERCULINUM LM and within 3 days the itch was drastically reduced. The mum said that this alone made a huge difference. She stayed on Tuberculinum for nearly 5 months, going up in potency each month. Her skin progressively cleared – a fast improvement over the 1st two months. Then the final clearance happened at a slower pace. The eczema has never returned. That was nearly 10 years ago.

2. The Head-Case!

What a great case this was. A young toddler who was born with a rash-type eruption on his skin. It then became particularly bad on his head, around his face and scalp. The itch was extreme, and his skin would ooze and then bleed after he scratched. Mum describes his skin as very sensitive. His face immediately reacts whenever he eats tomatoes or a tomato-based sauce.

I prescribed OLEANDER LM1.

Within a month the itch was gone. His scalp had cleared. He had some still on his face and the usual areas on body (wrists, knees). I moved to Oleander LM2 and he had some small improvements over the next 3-4 weeks. I was expecting more than that but I was happy to stick with the remedy for another month. So I prescribed Oleander LM3 and then we had a reaction! His skin cleared. I didn’t hear from them again for a number of months when he went on holidays and had a reaction to suncreams (his skin was still very sensitive). I repeated the same remedy but gave a miasmatic nosode of Tuberculinum alongside.

He has gone on to have flares every now and then. He had a bad flare when he got chickenpox. This really comes down to his presdisposition to this; we all have a predisposition to something. But he always responds really well to treatment.

3. Hot Eczema

This was an unusual case of Eczema. She was covered with what her Mum called a “measles type rash” all over her legs, groin and arms. It looks red, raw, and dry. It doesn’t get itchy (this is the unusual part). Her skin feels really hot where the rash is bad. She also has a constant runny nose. The Eczema has only been going on a few months and she is age 10.

I prescribed BELLADONNA 200. There was an immediate reaction (as there usually is with Belladonna). Her skin cleared.

She then moved on to another remedy to deal with chronic constipation which also had a good reaction.

4. The Usual Suspect

This case responded really well to one of the well-known Eczema remedies – SILICA. She had been diagnosed with Eczema at 4 months but it really flared at 6 months, after vaccination. Her skin flared and became red raw. The eczema was particularly bad around the vaccine site. Skin is very dry and flaky. She scratches until bleeds. It has now spread to her face. Her skin is sensitive to most creams.

She was presenting with really generic eczema symptoms, which can make choosing a remedy difficult. But she had one thing that was very particular. Her feet were always damp with sweat, and could be a bit whiffy too. Between this, and the sensitivity to vaccines, I prescribed SILICA.

Her skin improved well over the next few weeks but didn’t clear. Mum felt that her skin wasn’t as dry or red.

I repeated the Silica for another 4 weeks. The Eczema cleared much better on this prescription. She was then left with it only on her hands. At this stage, she has been diagnosed with an egg allergy (confirms my prescription choice of Silica).

She had two more prescriptions of Silica which cleared the Eczema fully.

5. My Most Popular Eczema Prescription - MEZEREUM

MEZEREUM is a little-known remedy which is a MUST HAVE for consideration when treating Eczema. It can look like Tuberculinum because of its reaction to vaccines. I have used this remedy numerous times, with great effect. It is one of the remedies I will always consider when treating the skin.

There are so many other remedies worth considering too. And I’ve used most of them at some stage – Rhus Tox, Rhus Ven, Manganum, Petroleum, Graphites, Calc-Sulph, Sulphur, Kali-A, and much more.

The classical homeopathic approach to treating Skin issues is to treat the ‘whole person’ – having the emotional and mental characteristics uppermost. I disagree with this and I’ll tell you why. The skin should be treated as a top layer (just like the skin). If you treat deeper than this, you are confusing the body – trying to get it to treat something that doesn’t need treating at this time, and might not need treating at all. This is where the possibilities of aggravations occur – in my experience, aggravations to the skin should not happen. Yes we can see a slight increase of symptoms (as the body lets it go), anything more than this means you are pushing too hard.

If there is a definite trigger to Eczema (for example, an illness or meds) this is important. And this becomes the focus. It is quite easy to do a detox here and reverse the negative reaction.

I have treated a LOT of Eczema cases. And Eczema can be very generic in its presentation. The key to finding the best matching remedy is to know what questions need to be asked, and answered. Most Eczema is dry, red, itchy – this matches so many remedies and gives no indicators which remedy would be best. Getting down to the detailed information, and the more detailed the better, is paramount.
