Preparing, for better or worse

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

Hi fellow Steemians and preppers,

A much different kind of post from me with this one. I have mixed feelings doing it but with a toddler in the house, we felt it prudent to be more prepared now rather than try to run around later.

What am I talking about? Stocking up on some essential foodstuffs in the house in the scenario where things get worse with this corona virus scenario that’s playing out. My wife is a coupon champion so we’ve got enough toilet paper for the rest of the year, on pure accident a couple months ago lol

We normally have a small amount of this stuff in the cabinets but today, I had the largest grocery bill we’ve ever had, almost 200$.

This one is relatively unchanged but I did add some more tomato sauce to it.

This was stocked up. One of the biggest things we’ve focused on with our son is having clean, distilled water enhanced with electrolytes or Fiji water. I know the plastic bottles aren’t the best for various health or environmental reasons but unfortunately you have to have give and take.

This one was stocked pretty well today. I focused on getting things that were bagged like the tortilla chips, and the cereal. Then there was some ghee, not sure what that was specifically for but what the heck why not lol.

We are focusing on maintaining our normal, mostly fresh foods diet like avocados and veggies but there’s potential, programmed or not, that things at the grocery store will get very difficult. Having lots of canned and slow-perishable foods that are what we want like organic and what we would normally buy is important. We of course hope to not have to resort to using the stuff out of necessity but it’s far better to be prepared, than unprepared.

I’m not trying to advocate for any fear agenda, because that’s exactly what is desired. If you think with your logic instead of with emotions, the outcome is typically quite different. I’m hoping that more come to a sense of calm preparation in case things go to a more difficult scenario. In years past, with each different fear-for-your-life scenario, it’s usually never as severe as those who promote the fear porn make it out to be. With the increased difficulty getting valid information from this situation, either insane infection rates, or a tepid rise in it, the information is something to consider. I’m neither fearful nor Blaisè about it, rather calculated. I would love for it to putter out but there’s lots of cancellations and things that haven’t happened before so paying attention here is I think prudent at least.

Are you doing anything to prepare for challenges? If not, would you consider doing mild preparations, so as not to get caught off guard? Let me know!

I’m not trying to start debates, rather thoughts about well-being.

The danger will not be shortages. You will, however, want to reduce the number of times you are exposed to other people. This is where stocking up is essential. Even if you become infected, staying home will help reduce the spread. So, good job.

No chance of me prepping as I travel, but Jamie's Mum has stocked up for our arrival in UK.. I do hope we aren't quarantined when we get there!!

Best of luck to you traveling there! Thankfully from what I’ve seen the UK isn’t like Italy at least. Makes me sad my favorite country is getting all kinds of sickness!

Travel safely!!

That's where I was at with this thing. It didn't just start with things happening now with the stock market, oil or any of that as much as the stuff coming out of China that normally didn't come out of China during the rise of a new virus...it wasn't just the videos people were managing to get out but the overcrowded overflowing hospitals, the building of two temporary hospitals in ten days, then quarantining millions of people all led me to believe I needed to start prompting my kids into a heads up on this one. They didn't take me seriously at first, they thought I had lost my mind actually. The weekend before last they finally come to grips that something wasn't sounding quite right this time around and started taking preparations seriously, which took a lot of pressure off me as I was wondering how I'd stock for twelve people if we had to all back up into this place together at some point, at least they can bring their stock loads with them now.

I am a bit like you since I am by myself now I eat entirely different than when I had kids, about the only thing in my back up stock pile I enjoy along that line is tuna fish, otherwise it's pretty mundane stuff meant to last a bit like giant cartons of oatmeal, pancake mix, flour, sugar, yeast and butter to make my own bread if it comes down to that, canned soups, pasta, sauces, etc., you know, the kind of stuff you had around when you had kids basically stretching out the family dollar making casseroles, spaghetti and the likes. It was hard not to be able to grab up large containers of cottage cheese, which I love and my kids hated when they were young, but even though I eat a lot of it I can't eat it fast enough before it goes bad. I am hoping though I will still be able to get a garden of some things growing in the side yard for some fresh stuff but not as much hope as wishing this thing goes away with warmer weather....around here they predict that may be around June...which is still a long haul considering we just went through winter being cooped up mostly inside.

Damn son I don’t blame you with the US living on just in time for most of their supply chains theirs only like 3 days of supplies at any given time to support a city!

Hope you got some cleaning supplies too! I don’t think you’re over reacting a lot of people will have to contract it for us to be able to find ones with immunity so we can get this sorted

I was listening to this dude on Joe Rogan and he was like the US is ideal for this disease because of the rampant obesity, that it won’t just be an old people’s sickness there!
