Monday Red - Equinox edition

in #homesteading5 years ago

So long, summer! It seems like just yesterday I was complaining about the heat, and now it's over. The last couple of years, summer has departed like a criminal skipping bail instead of the gentle segue we used to get between seasons. Now I go to bed in summer and wake up to fall. I am feeling a little defiant about it, though, so here are a couple of summer flowers. I am not quite ready to let go yet.

Here's the whole flower. I wish I knew what it was, but I forgot to ask.

This one is a hollyhock, and it's not precisely red, but I feel like it's close enough.

Those last few were a throwback to midsummer. Now I guess I have to stop the denial and post a few from more recently. These are some wild rose hips that I will go harvest after we get a good frost.

In this next one I was just trying to capture some of the plants that grow along the edge of the slough, but when I looked at it at home, I noticed that the blackberry canes have their lovely fall hue.

This one isn't really a picture of red, unless you count the handle of my clippers at the top of the hill. I am just including it to show how good I've been about not walking on uneven ground. Nobody tell my doctor!

I'll close my little equinox post with a shot of a lovely rotting barn that I pass frequently but had never stopped to photograph until today. I really want to explore inside it, but I fear it might collapse on my head. Also, there's the whole it's not my property thing.

Those are my autumnal reds for today, except for those that were shot in the summer, but I am pretty sure we agreed to overlook that. Happy equinox, everyone! It's going to get dark soon.

We complain it's too hot in summer and too cold in winter! LOL!

Complaining about the weather is a hobby!

Very nice and colourful photos of summer days! Hope the sun is still shining bright for you all!

Thank you! The sun seems to have left the hemisphere for a while. I am holding out hope that it will return for a couple of weeks before it leaves for good. I'm not quite ready to have moss growing on my car again!

What! Moss growing on your car!!!
Your car will become a tree soon in that case!

We just had the carpet of moss removed from the path in the garden! It was very slippery on wet days! Very dangerous!

It's always odd reading these sort of posts as we're heading into summer down here. (You guys are backwards). I got invited to an equinox party actually, in the States...Well, I use the word invited loosely as I in fact invited myself. Unfortunately @ginnyannette decided to rescind my self-invite. I'm bummed about it, but after some counselling should be over it in a year or two.

I actually thought of you as I was writing the last sentence. Try not to brag too much in the upcoming months about your fabulous weather. You'll just make me cry.

I'm sure @ginnyannette wouldn't have turned you away if you had actually showed up to her party, although I didn't get an invitation either. But she did invite me to come hang out and drink wine and lemonade with her and her best friend, so I guess I'm one up on you. :) Let me know how the counselling turns out. I hope you're okay...

Get ready to cry... :)

Counselling is going ok so far. I'm not mad at Ginny anymore now...Just that I didn't get any of that awesome cake she made at midnight. I'm sure if i turned up on her doorstep she'd be so thrilled. She'd probably set Big Dog on me.

Ha, I think it will all be just fine. Big Dog will like your accent. Americans of all varieties like Australian accents.

Well then...I should have turned up! Could have enjoyed me a piece of midnight-cake. Maybe next time.

P.s You're the ones with the accents. We just talk normally. 😆

Oh good. I'm glad you're recovering. It's impossible to stay mad at Ginny. I'm pretty sure Big Dog would just check your pockets for food and then go lie down somewhere. I get the feeling he's not terribly aggressive.

Yeah, big dog seems more of a big cuddly dog. And yes, hard to stay mad at Ginny. Damn her. 🤣

Speaking of, I have my weekly meet up with my friend tomorrow. You would like her. Join us any time :)

Aw, you can always self invite. It was a pretty low-key party this year, you might have spiced things up :)

Isn't that beauty a hibiscus? The Florida state flower. That's a lie, but it ought to be the Florida state flower. If it weren't a favorite of the deer I would have them all over the place. Clearly that picture of the goats was taken from ground level - very flat ground level. Of course.

Happy autumn to you! I wish we had a drastic autumn change. It isn't extremely noticeable, but is nice nonetheless.

I think you're right about the hibiscus. Happy autumn to you too! Has your weather cooled down? Ours definitely has. We had a couple of sunny days but I hear the rain is coming back. Sigh.

It's sad to see the summer go. I can see in the dark, but I know you humans can't so well. Perhaps a seeing eye kitty is needed? MEOW!

I have some seeing eye kitties, but they mostly just sleep so they're not very helpful.

Beautiful!

What do you do with the rose hips?

They're very high in vitamin C, so I dry them and add them to herbal tea when I'm trying to fight off the winter bugs.

It’s always Nice to read your post ! This is a nice one

Beautiful shots, as always.
The mystery flower. I'd like to see the leaves - and know whether they are fuzzy or smooth. If smooth, they are most likely hibiscus. If fussy, they may be lavatera, a type of mallow. Their flowers are very similar, even the leaves are similar except for texture.

It might be hibiscus. It was growing in my best friend's greenhouse, so hibiscus makes more sense. How's your weather behaving over there? It's been very dark and depressing over here, and it's only September. I can't vouch for my sanity come February.

Hibiscus grows well in Vancouver, so it's very likely.
Weather is doing okay - starting to cool down noticeably. I'm looking forward to the fall temps.

What a great equinox celebration! Autumn has arrived. Great photos and thanks for entering Walkway Shadows!

Autumn has definitely arrived! I'm glad we had a sunny day left to get some shadows! I should have spent the summer taking random pictures of shadows in case one of them works for a contest in the winter.

A folder full of shadow pictures is always a good thing to have on hand! Plus, it's fun to go shadow hunting.
