Retired and Planning for 2020

in #homesteading5 years ago

Had a long hiatus from Steemit. 2019 was hectic epic to say the least.

Winter in Oklahoma is very surprising. Some freezing days and most of them are only at night.
We're fighting high humidity in the greenhouse. Aphids are constant visitors.

Moles Galore

We have a mole issue at the homestead. I haven't really read anything on the best way to keep them away from the property.

A fellow farmer said to plant castor beans on your garden areas. We're going to plant them this spring.

That picture is from Pixabay. Maybe I'll replace it with our own castor beans picture last time we planted them. I didn't realize they can grow so big.

Come spring time, they will grace this place again.

Crop Calculator

Anyone know of a calculator to estimate how many seedlings to plant to feed a family?

Say, how many lettuce, tomato, spinach, okra, eggplant (etc) to plant every 3 weeks?

The calculator should be able to accept a variable of how much a family consumes a week or a month. Not necessarily how many are there in a family.

Till next time!

Oh hey, wasn't expecting you guys to update again.

Hi!

All us pumpkins missed you.

This comes from a now defunct website:

Not exactly what you were looking for, but it might help.

Thank you, this is a good resource. How do you plan your crops?

I learned from that site to inventory all food items at least once a year. After a couple years you will know what your family will eat of an item in one year. I try to not carry over very much as most food items lose value after a year.

I plan my gardens in December and have my seed orders sent in by December 20th. I use this site initially:

https://www.growveg.com/

because it helps eliminate planting the same family of plants in an area several years running. Once made I make a paper copy on graph paper and that goes out to the garden with me. I do it in pencil and make changes and notes as I plant.
