Great post @hami, I tried to make kombucha earlier this autumn but in the damp chilly English weather it just decided to commit bacteria-suicide and went moldy. Your post has given me a few ideas as to what I could do to avoid killing my precious scoby next time I get my hands on one:
Step 1: Boil the crap out of your water. We bring ours to a boil and then keep it boiling for a good 20 mins to totally kill all other bacteria that might compete with the good kind you’re trying to encourage.
I didn't boil it long enough. Case closed 😉
Cheers for the lesson m8
Hey, the hardest part is trying for the first time. Anything after that you're pretty much bound to have better success. You can make your own scoby too with just a bottle or two of your favourite kombucha from the store.
With growing mushrooms or any bacteria, the name of the game is sterilization. You need to understand that the bacteria or fungi or whatever that you want to grow will be growing on something that also has other bacteria. If you can limit the amount of 'other bacteria' by being as sterile as possible you give the desired bacteria a chance to win the war.
Question - where did you store it ? Seems like you could store a large jar or bucket in the house right?
Anyways, good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. Your comment keeps me inspired to keep posting on Steem. Thanks
