The Conclusion of Our Duck SAGA! How We are Keeping Them SAFE!

Just look at those happy ducks! They love their new home!

RELEASE THE QUACKEN!

We are so glad to have our ducks in a safe and happy place now! It was quite an adventure from start to finish.

It all started out when we found a nest our duck had been sitting on. https://steemit.com/homesteading/@wholesomeroots/what-did-i-find-looking-for-my-missing-duck

We were so excited but our excitement was quickly squashed by multiple predators preying on our ducks and their eggs. https://steemit.com/homesteading/@wholesomeroots/an-unfortunate-chain-of-events-what-is-going-on-with-our-ducks

So without knowing what the predator that took the three adult ducks was, we needed to be sure we had them in a safe place. We did not have another coop to close them in securely. And quite frankly, we didn't want to close them in. The last time we closed in ducks it ended very badly. Ducks will flee from predators at night, unlike chickens that sit still and make easy targets. So if they are out in the open they can flee and save themselves, in a closed structure they are cornered! But I had a plan, a plan I had wanted to do all along but couldn't convince Ryan until now!

The Solution!

We have a huge round riding arena on our property because the previous tenants had horses. We added field fence and a hot wire to it when we got our big Hereford hog we had for a year. After she had gone to freezer camp we put the goats in it for a winter paddock. Then, when spring came and we had vegetation in the pasture again, we began rotational grazing the does and kept the bucks in the round pen. This was a huge area for just three bucks so we decided they could have some roommates.

Look at that big safe space to enjoy!

The fence charger for the goats is super strong! It made the chicken net fence from Premiere One very HOT! So we set them up inside four fences, two of which were electric! The only thing we have to worry about now is aerial predators and the occasional serpent egg thief! I can live with that! I feel much better knowing they are so safe in our Fort Quacks!

We all helped move them including the 2 and 5 year old! It wasn't an easy task but we had fun! It was a full day but we got it done with teamwork. The boys are now pretty obsessed with checking on the ducks while I milk the goats. If you want to watch the big move on our YouTube vlog you can!

Also, if you are on Facebook and enjoy using the Groups feature of that social media platform, we have started a Homesteading on Steemit group to help get new people to join Steemit and learn together in a welcoming and open community! Check it out and join if you like!
