Eve Tushnet, GAY AND CATHOLIC
Gay and Catholic: Accepting My Sexuality, Finding Community, Living My Faith by Eve Tushnet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Eve Tushnet is out, Catholic, and celibate, and doesn't give a hoot if you say that is impossible. Here she relates her journey to faith, and from there launches into a discussion of how to deal with such a situation.
This book takes up issues of importance not just to same-sex-attracted (to use her preferred term), not just to Catholics, but to all laity who are not called to ordination or marriage, and wonder "what do we DO about it?" I was particularly impressed by her discussion of how friendship has been devalued in today's society, which does not offer us any non-sexual models of intimacy. (Or, as Baron Corvo had it, defines "friend" as "someone [I] might address in the street without receiving a slash across the face by [my] insolence.")
