To Make Bitcoin Legal Tender in CA, Bitcoiners May Have To Rewrite Constitution
California's Bitcoiners are hoping to become the first state to accept cryptocurrency as a legal tender, even if it means going against the US Constitution.
It's a bottom-up approach, just like Bitcoin is a bottom-up approach, says Bitcoin advocate Dennis Porter, who is working to move the bill forward. The states have the final say on what is in the constitution and if we have to, we will go to a paragraph and we will rewrite the constitution.
Republican State Republican Jordan Cunningham introduced the Assembly Bill on February 19, 2698. The bill has since been sent to the committee.
The goal is to establish Bitcoin as a legal tender in the state, but the process is complicated, according to Ian Calderon, a former leader of the California State Assembly and chairman of the political advocacy group Majority Advisors.
