The Slippers.
Ned was so happy when his Mom bought him a new pair of slippers. His old ones were already worn out and there was even a hole big enough to see through it. Ned loved his new slippers so much that he would wear them every time and show them proudly off to his playmates.
Now Ned had a brother named Dan. Dan was a little older than Ned and was usually jealous whenever Mom bought something for Ned and nothing for him. He also resented the fact that he would soon move in with his uncle because of financial problems since their Mom couldn't support two children anymore.
One night, Ned put his slippers beside his bed and slept peacefully. The next morning, he was shocked to see them all muddy and dirty. Ned went to his Mom and asked her if she had used them.
Mom replied, "Why would I use that? My foot's size is 7 and that is 4!"
Ned then spotted Dan in the living room and angry. He assumed that Dan had used his slippers without his permission and began screaming at him about it. Their Mom heard them arguing and tried to pry them apart. Next, she turned to Ned and asked him, "How could Dan wear those? He just arrived from your uncle's house, where he slept over with." Ned quickly apologized to his brother Dan but still couldn't figure out who had used his slippers.
The incident would recur every night without fail. Ned would go to sleep with his slippers spanking clean and wake up to find them soiled and dirty.
Eventually they found out that there was once a couple who lived in their house before them. They had a son who was about the same age as Ned. One cold rainy night, his parents disappeared without a trace. The little boy wore his slippers and walked around and around the house, waiting in vain for his parents to come back. They didn't. They never came back. Eventually, the boy died of a broken heart. The neighbors swear, however, that they can still hear the boy walking round and round the house. He walks around night after night, leaving only muddied slippers prints all over the house.
