Horror Movie Review: The Descent(2005)
I watched The Descent a few months ago now, but realized I hadn't written a review, and it definitely deserves one.
The story is quite simple, Sarah(Shauna Macdonald) and her friends love rafting and caving. Sarah's husband is the victim of a brutal accident and killed. Sarah's friends want to help get Sarah back on her feet and into some of her favorite activities. Sarah and her close friend Beth (Alex Reid) join up to explore a cave system in the Appalachians mountains with the organizer of the expedition, Juno (Natalie Mendoza). Juno, has planned a trip into a previously uncharted cave system in the hopes of claiming recognition and fame. This truly is not a good idea for a girls trip, and things start to go downhill quickly. Obviously, their cave exploration goes horribly wrong. They are lost and don't have any idea how to get out, and they are being hunted by terrifying eating creatures. So they are absolutely in the fight for their lives.
THE DESCENT is definitely lovely and perfect in every way. The tension of being trapped in unidentified cave system is perceptible. To me, this movie is one of the best British horror-films I have seen in a long time and one that proves once again that you don't need a big budget to make a good movie. So if you like violent horror, then go see this one. And remember: Darkness won't kill you; what's in it will!
