Share quality content.
Come up with a list of all the things you can share about. For examples: your hobbies, life, travel, whats going on in the news or in the cryptocurrency world. It can almost be ANYTHING.
People really like “How To's”.
For example, “How to”... Food recipes, gardening, exercise workouts, investing in cryptocurrency. "How to's" caught attention because we all love learning new things that make our life easier.

Make people laugh. Entertainment is valuable. Entertain your audience with funny memes or jokes.
We know how we can all get hooked into watching funny cat videos on YouTube(well, now on Steemit) for hours.
If you find a funny video or article you can share it. Try to also input your thoughts on the topic or why it was funny to you.

Photography is another good one. We all love seeing epic and beautiful travel photography. So next time you are on a hike or a walking across Downtown San Francisco, make you you take some creative pictures that you think people might like. Tell a story with these pictures.

@daveks <--posts beautiful photography everyday.

If you have a niche topic or skill(mine is AcroYoga), you may have it a bit easier to start. Steemit is a newish social media platform and if you have stuff to share here that others have not posted about, you can do very well.
Either way.
Lets get started! Post some interesting quality content!

Consistency

You must keep things rolling.
If you post something and you only makes 0.01 $, don't give up!
Keep posting on a regular bias. It may be once a day, every other day, once a week.
If you post at the same time everyday, people will get use to seeing your post. It will also get them in a habit of seeing your work, and hopefully up voting it.
They might even resteem your work!

Engagement

Engagement is key when starting off. It can be hard to get the momentum going with out may people following you. Engaging with others through comments will help you get known in the Steemit world.
Taking the effort to read someones post and give a good thoughtful responses will help with getting your name/brand more exposure, and in turn, more followers.
If you read something interesting, give good feedback on the topic, great discussions can start.
Comment back on the comments you get from people responding to your post. Tell the thank you for the comment or feedback. Staring relationships with your audience will help your followers grow, and you might even make some new friends.
For more on this and other great advice, check out Papa-Peppers( @papa-pepper ), "Tips For Newer Users on Steemit". He has a whole video series to help new users. I found them very useful.

I save photos to my computer then use the link in the pic above.
