Huawei launches 68-megapixel triple camera smartphone

PARIS: Chinese electronic giants Huawei launched its latest addition to the P-series with the P20 smartphone unveiled at an event on Tuesday.

Previously, the P20 smartphone along with the P20 Pro were expected to be launched at the Mobile World Congress this year, however, Huawei instead used the event to focus on their new laptop.

The Pro variant features a Leica triple camera along with advances to its core Artificial Intelligence functions. Huawei’s in-house Kirin 970 processor is chosen as the chip primarily as it caters well to the AI needs of the device.

The processor previously powered Huawei’s flagship Mate 10 series.

“With a breakthrough triple camera on the Huawei P20 Pro, an advanced dual camera on the Huawei P20, and powerful artificial intelligence on both, today’s most vibrant consumers can capture and share the brilliance of the world around them,” according to Richard Yu, Chief Executive Officer, Huawei Consumer Business Group.

In terms of its camera, both variants boast a 24-megapixel selfie camera, a big upgrade on the P10.

The P20 Pro Triple camera system consists of a 20-megapixel Monochrome camera, a 40-megapixel camera with f/1.8 lens and a Telephoto lens with an 8-megapixel camera.

Both devices also have screens that are almost bezel-less.

Huawei will be looking to address issues recently faced by the company after US lawmakers proposed a ban on Huawei products, a move which analysts termed as a repercussion of the current trade conflict between the US and China.

Huawei launches P smart device in Pakistan

Most Huawei devices sold in the US are through the wireless carrier AT&T. With the carrier’s refusal to cater Huawei devices, the Chinese giant faced a vacuum in the US market.

It remains to be seen whether this latest device will shift attention away from the entire episode.

The basic version of the device will be priced at 649 euros.
