Buglab: The Ultimate Cybersecurity Solution
Life is a series of imperfections and that's something that we cannot remove from it. However, being the "intelligent species," that we are, our race has developed numerous ways to make life more convenient. From the discovery of fire to the invention of smartphones, we are in a continuous pursuit to make life as convenienas possible.
Despite all this, the idea of imperfection still stands and it wears down all of our great inventions. Furthermore, we face a bigger crisis - the bad side of human nature. In our day and age, people exploit the vulnerabilities of technology to hack into a system for their personal gain.
No one is safe from malicious activities from these hackers. In fact, the government has been hacked several times in the past. Even NASA was hacked by a 15 year old hacker. This tells us that the possibilities are endless and that hackers would eventually find the vulnerabilities in whatever kind of system.
As days pass, hackers grow in number and people in the cybersecurity remain scarce. In fact, a 2017 Global Informaton Security Workforce Study obtained from both Frost & Sullivan and International Information Systems Security Certifications Consortium, Inc. predicts that by 2022 there will be more than 1.8 million jobs left vacant in the cybersecurity industry.
This goes hand in hand with saying that when the demand greatly surpasses the supply, we can expect to see an exponentially expensive service/product. Actually, we could already feel the effects now; seeing that most, if not only, big corporations can afford good quality cybersecurity services.
Thankfully, Buglab creates the perfect fix for our system's bug issue (pun intended).
Buglab aims to make ammends to the current flawed system of employing cybersecurity services. Now, there are two ways to avail these services: the first is through hiring a cybersecurity consulting firm who then only has one or two penetration testers working on the case, giving it a limited scope. The second is having bug bounty programs that will require companies to pay for every vulnerability found. Most of which, are irrelevant to the client!
The Buglab Solution
In a nutshell, Buglab will provide a platform for businesses, whether big or small, and cybersecurity experts to connect. Sounds easy enough, right? Almost like using any other social media or communication platform? Well, that is not the case. The platform is founded on blockchain technology and is powered by smart contracts. This makes any sort of interaction on the system seamless and more importantly, secure. Anonimity may also be guaranteed for whitehat researchers and contributors that opt not to be known. Moreover, the platform is incentivized so that testers will be rewarded for discovering vulnerabilities in the system. A time-competetive environment that is sure to bring out the best in this field's experts.
Buglab Platform Features
Besides simply being incentivized and blockchain-based, the platform offers so much more features both in terms of its interface and function to allow efficiency and quality to melt together.
Public Contests
It sounds as simple as the name suggests. Companies will be giving out the basic information and users on the other end will be invited publicly to paticipate.
Private Contests
If a client fancies particular pentesters or firms in the community, he may choose to invite them privately to participate in the contest.
Selection Filters
Some clients might be more comfortable working with pentesters that are geographically closer to them, or have a good score on the platform, or maybe even a wider skillset. The selection filter allows clients to customize the attributes of pentesters that they wish to employ.
Triage System
This makes sure that vulnerabilities are filtered so that no two will receive the same reward. Say for example pentester A finds a unique vulnerability two minutes earlier than pentester B, the triage system will take note of this and make sure to only notify the client once.
Reports (Summary and Real-Time)
Companies will receive a summary of each contest's outcome. This allows a company to gauge their security status as well as compare their assets' progress. Besides the summary report, the platform also showcases real-time reporting that lets the client witness the contest progress; receiving vulnerability reports as well as fix suggestions.
Mediation
Buglab also wants to protect their pentesters which is why pentesters are allowed to request for a mediator in the event that a customer chooses to head their own challenge. Mediators will be impartial judges as to whether or not the customer gives accurate scores.
Leaderboard
There are two types. One is the overall leaderboard that can be accessed on the platform's dashboard. It will display the rankings of pentesters both in terms of experience and performance results. This feature allows clients an easier task in choosing a select few for private challenges. Another leaderboard is utilized for the contest itself, displaying the progress and activity of each pentester as seen in the image below.
Chat
A simple chat between pentesters and clients after a reported vulnerability can go a long way in actually fixing it.
Fix Companion
This feature is exclusive to the Enterprise level (will be discussed in the next feature). With this, Buglab will confirm whether or not the fix has been implemented. The client has five chances to fix the issue.
Client-Managed
There are three types of contest management that clients may choose from; Basic, Pro, and Enterprise. Each comes with different levels of accesss to the platforms features. Ultimately, this gives clients a sense of agency in being able to freely move about and decide what course of action to take in looking for vulnerabilities in their system. A chart below shows what kinds of features each type has.
The Buglab Token (BGL)
This token will be utilized in the platfom's ecosystem in order to provide incentives to its users. It will basically be used as a reward to contest winners, to finance a contest's cost, to reward white hats, to fund the reserve for the platform's maintenance, and to reward Computer Emergency Response Teams and Computer Security Incident Response Teams that help in forging new partnerships between clients and Buglab.
