TERRAWATT: Future of LED
Light - emitting diodes or LEDs are commonly found on small electronic displays and not on household bulbs a few years ago because of the weak light it emits but according to the Lighting Research Center, LED light bulbs work by bringing together currents with a positive and negative charge to create energy released in the form of light. The result is a fast source of light that is reliable, instantaneous, and able to be dimmed. LED lights last much longer than other bulbs in the market like CFL and incandescent bulbs. Initially, LED lights cost more because of the combination of durability and efficiency that it holds but later on prices dropped considerably.
Currently the best LED bulbs cut power consumption by 85% compared to incandescent light bulbs and by 40% compared to fluorescent lights aside from the fact that it can last up to 5 years if used non-stop and up to ten years if used just a few hours a day. The life of LEDs even last 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs and around 3 to 7 times longer than fluorescents. Also, LED bulbs provide superior light quality than compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). Therefore it is extremely cost effective, it greatly reduce electric bills, is profitable over time, and it helps save the environment because it lessens greenhouse gas emissions.
As stated by Goldman Sachs in a new report. “The rapid adoption of LEDs in lighting marks one of the fastest technology shifts in human history.”
In the US, the adoption of light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs is sped up to save consumers and business $20 billion a year in electricity costs within ten years which will then lower CO2 emissions by some 100 million metric tons a year. The LED adoption could cut global energy costs and carbon pollution 5 times as much. Earlier this year GE announced that it would stop making CFLs for the U.S. market and instead focus its consumer lighting efforts on LED lamps. Imagine the environmental impact of this move to the growing problem on pollution.
Benefits of LED
Compared to CFLs, LEDs light up immediately, like an incandescent bulb and it features a crisp color similar to moonlight or natural light. LEDs are available in soft, warm, and bright white hues. It is also energy-efficient and long-lasting because it last up to five times longer than CFLs which can literally last a lifetime. They don’t heat up much so they stay cool to the touch even after use. LEDs are not sensitive to cold a temperature that is why they are more appropriate for street lamps. Because LEDs do not contain mercury, they are environment-friendly. Also, some models can be used with a dimmer switch perfect for bedroom lamps.
DAO
DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organisation. It is powered by Ethereum smart contracts. It is funded through the sale of ‘DAO tokens’ during the crowdfunding period ending 28 May 2016. Token holders actually have a say to what the company does. New ideas are presented to the DAO in the form of proposals. Token holders then can vote on proposals and, if approved, contractors will be allowed to compete for work on projects.
Terawatt DAO
It is a decentralized autonomous organization that is basically a pool of funding allocation for power companies, all businesses, and their customers. Terawatt will act as both a funding bank, payment currency, and as a permanent verifiable data ledger. It would be like an insurance fund that will help businesses and everyday consumers provide the funds needed to afford upgrading their existing lights to LED. Currently, Terrawatt is aggressively pursuing partnerships with some of the largest utility companies, utility commissions, and Lighting manufacturers in the world like GE and Philips.
Terawatt LED token
Terawatt LED tokens will be offered to consumers that use their patent-pending verification technology in order to verify consumers’ led bulbs purchases. Also, Terawatt will be accepted by utility companies and businesses as a payment currency. Terawatt Token will act as a reward for each verified LED bulb purchased. This will serve as an incentive for users to purchase LEDs for their homes, businesses, or for government use and verify them through the Terawatt platform.
