Grotta di Netuno - Neptune's grotto
Near the city Alghero on the island of Sardegna is a natural spectacle worth to visit. Grotta di Nettuno is a massive stalactite cave which can be entered via a nearly perpendicular stairway or from the sea with a boat. The cave was discovered in 18th century from fisherman and is now a real tourist attraction. We took the stairway because of the view.

Carved out of a massive rocks face the stairway has 654 stairs to go. The stairway build in 1954 is also called „goats steps“.

Needless to say, the way down was easy, but going up 654 stairs, with temperatures that felt like we where on the sun’s surface, was nearly killing us. But it was worth the struggle. Set in scene with different light the awesomeness of nature emerged more beautiful than ever. The whole system is more than 4 km long and lies only 1 meter over the sea level but only a few hundred metres are accessible to the public. The sea has to be calm for a visit. Inside is a salt water lake directly connected with the sea. If you on the way to Alghero then do a small detour to visit the Grotta di Nettuno.
