I'm advanced amateur who just enjoys taking pictures. Line between being professional and amateur is very thin and subjective. My equipment right now: Sony a7s camera and Canon lenses. I believe that equipment is not that important - maybe in corner cases where specific parameters gives you more creative freedom.
