Amrita Pritam was a famous poetess, novelist and essayist who was the best poet of the 20th century Punjabi language. Her family settled in Delhi at the time of Partition. Now she started writing in Hindi along with Punjabi.
She was married to an editor at the age of 16. After which they got divorced in the year 1960.

Amrita Pritam has written about 100 books in total, including his famous autobiography 'Rasidi Ticket'. Amrita Pritam was among those writers whose works were translated into many languages.

Honours and awards

Amrita was also honored with several national and international awards, prominent among them being the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956, the 1958 Award by the Department of Language of the Government of Punjab, the Bulgaria Vairov Prize (International) in 1988 and India's highest literary award, gyanpith puraskar in 1982.

She was the first woman to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award. Also, she was the first Punjabi woman to be awarded the Padma Shri in 1969.
