भारतीय संस्कृति में हर पर्व व त्यौहार से जुड़ी पूरा
कथाएं मिलती हैं। दीपावली के तीसरे दिनकार्तिक
शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया को यह त्यौहार मनाया जाता है।
भैया दूज से संबंधित कई लोक कथाएं प्रचलित है।
भविष्योत्तर पुराण की कथा के अनुसार सूर्य पुत्र
यम और यमुना में बड़ा स्नेह था ।बाद में राज कार्य
में व्यस्त हो जाने पर यम अपनी बहन को भूल गए
तब यमुना ने कार्तिक के शुल्क पक्ष की द्वितीया को
यम को अपने यहां आमन्त्रित किया। यम सारा राजकाज छोड़कर बहन के यहां पहुंचे। यमुना ने प्रसन्न मन से भाई का
टीका किया और स्वादिष्ट भोजन कराया। प्रसन्न होकर यम ने बहन से कुछ मांगने को कहा। यमुना ने मांगा, ‘ऐसा आशीर्वाद दीजिए कि आज के दिन जो भाई बहन से टीका कराए, उसका कल्याण हो।'
इस कथा के अन्त में कहा गया है-‘हे युधिष्ठिर !
यमुना ने कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष द्वितीय के दिन यम को
आमन्त्रित किया था। अत: यह पर्व यम द्विती से हुआ।
इस दिन अपनी बहन के हाथ का बना और परोसा।
हुआ भोजन करना चाहिए।'
इस पौराणिक आह्वान के फलस्वरूप 'यम द्वितीया '
का पर्व अस्तित्व में आया। धीरे-धीरे विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में
इसके नामों में विभिन्नता आ गई ।यथा बंगाल में भाई,
फोटा, महाराष्ट्र में भाऊ बीज गुजरात में भाई बीज और उत्तर भारत में भातृ-द्वितीय के रूप में यह लोकप्रिय हुआ है।
मथुरा में यमुना के विश्रांत घाट पर एक मंदिर है जिसमें यमुना अपने भाई यम को टीका लगा रही है। भातृ द्वितीय के दिन
से यमुना में स्नान करके इस मूर्ति का दर्शन करने
का बड़ा महात्म है । इस पर्व पर यहां स्नान और दर्शन
के लिए देश के कोने-कोने से भाई-बहन पहुंचते हैं।
उत्तर भारत के अवध अंचल में एक परम्परा है,
यहां के लोग बहन के साथ गोकुल जाकर सूर्यपुत्री
यमुना नदीके किनारे बहन के हाथों बनवाकर 'फरा
नामक पकवान खाते हैं। लोक विश्वास है कि ऐसा
करने से यमराज मृत्यु के समय कष्ट नहीं देते।
