Samudera Pasifik Dipenuhi Sampah Plastik Hampir Seluas Daratan Indonesia
Kumpulan-kumpulan sampah plastik di Samudera Pasifik yang dikenal dengan sebutan The Great Pacific Garbage Patch kini makin meluas dengan ukuran luar biasa. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch ini adalah kumpulan sampah-sampah plastik yang mengambang di lautan antara Hawaii dan California, terus membesar hingga berukuran 1,6 juta km2, atau hampir seluas daratan Indonesia (1,9 juta km2). Hal ini dilaporkan dalam jurnal Scientific Reports yang dipublikasikan oleh majalah Nature.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch ditemukan pertama kali pada tahun 1990-an, dan sampah-sampah tersebut berasal dari negara-negara di Lingkar Pacific (Pacific Rim) yang tersebar di Asia, Amerika Utara, dan Amerika Selatan, ditambah Lebretan. “Ini adalah fenomena alami yang terjadi di semua cekungan samudra subtropis di dunia. Sebenarnya, ada empat lagi zona akumulasi seperti ini: Pasifik selatan, Atlantik utara, Atlantik selatan, dan Samudra Hindia,”
