7 Effective Steps To Get Rid of Procrastination
Your deadline’s just around the corner.
Your'e self aware that you have a tedious but necessary task and should have been working on it by now.
But you just don’t quite feel like doing it. Instead you spend hours on social media, games, blogs, forums and you know, just “stuffs” that are not quite productive but enjoyable. That’s Procrastination and you have owned yourself a title as a Procrastinator.
Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.
– Christopher Parker
It is a slow disease. You won’t feel the effects today but you’ll regret it tomorrow. Sooner or later, procrastination will hamper your life, your job and let's say pretty much everything. For those who dream to be successful, it must be totally out of their life.
You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again.
– Benjamin Franklin
If you call yourself a victim of procrastination and looking for a way out, then you are exactly at the right place.
Here are 7 steps that will definitely help you get rid of Procrastination.
1. Know that it’s just a habit. Be conscious.
Everybody knows it’s a habit. But what most people fail to realize is that habits, as can be learned, can be unlearned and replaced by other habits. Another thing about habits is that, the more you practice them, the more you get addicted to them. So next time you try to procrastinate, be conscious that you are only just encouraging your habit and should stop getting more addicted to it.
2. Replace the habit with "Do it Now!" habit.
So how do you not procrastinate?
Easy by doing it now. It’s the habit just opposite. Build the habit of doing it now.
Instead of saying ‘tomorrow’, say ‘today’. Instead of saying ‘later’, say ‘now’. Just act. Move. Work. Just do it. And be conscious that it’s a habit. And habits do take time to build. Especially, replacing addictive habits do take a lot of time.Don't have your mind looking for some reason to stop or quit your work. So start small but don’t stop.
3. Create a To-Do List with Specific Deadlines.
Making a to-do list is simple. You organize everything you need to do in the immediate future in an order that makes sense to you. Complete the list before the deadline.
A Procrastinator generally does their work at the very end of deadline
So,when there are a specific deadline for a specific task this will help you build a sense of momentum and you will have a urgency to finish it.
4. Break the Bigger task into Smaller Manageable task.
One of the popular reason we avoid our work is that it’s too difficult or tough or large or whatever, you got the meaning.
So,breaking down tough jobs into easy pieces is the quickest way to make sure that they actually get done. When all those pieces of work get accomplished you’ll be able to see the pieces falling into place as you go along.
5. Be in an inspiring environment / Remove Distractions
Surround yourself with people who inspire you to overcome procrastination, motivates your progress and you to be successful. If you surround yourself with procrastinators, you’ll be one of them in no time.
Not only people, surround yourself with books, ideas and knowledge that motivate you.Single out all those distractions that leads you to stop doing the work and eliminate them from your work space.
You are the average of the five people you spend most time with.
– Jim Robin
6. Don’t seek to be perfect.
It is okay to be imperfect. Nobody becomes excellent in a matter of few days. It takes time. And it is okay to make mistakes and miss something here and there because we are humans. But one thing that is not okay is giving up. Make mistakes, learn from them, make slow progress, but don’t stop progressing.
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
-Vince Lombardi
7. Reward yourself.
Appreciate your efforts.
Set up a reward system to ensure you celebrate progress and small successes as you go along. When you decided to read this, you just made yourself more better than thousands of other people. And when you start working against procrastination, you’ll set yourself apart from millions of people. Be happy on your achievements, small or big. This will encourage you to keep going. Take breaks if you need. Enjoy some time. But don’t get carried away.
