Disgusted by insurance costs

Why does insurance cost so much? I was thinking that I would be able to get insurance for about half as much as it is going to cost me and I don't quite understand it. Almost half of my pay check goes to health insurance for me and my family. That doesn't seem right or sustainable. I guess this post is just a little rant :(.
