Hi Steemians, Meet “ME”
Greetings Steemians!
The Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Carl Gustav Jung’s quote “I am not what has happened to me. I am what I choose to become”, is one of my favorites. Sometimes I try so hard getting the right words to properly introduce myself, but it always at the end seem like I haven’t done enough to establish an idea — the physical and abstract (psychological) perception of “WHO I REALLY AM”.
WHO AM I?
Name, an identity of oneself, but mine actually elucidates the uniqueness of my birth and birth date (January 1st) — so, with a standing ovation, please, allow me to me introduce to you ABIODUN.
Beyond my obvious rugged exterior is a fragile, glassy heart and qualities expected of a good man. In other words, I have a very offbeat (freakish) sense of humor and can be very witty when needful.
I bag a B.Sc in Linguistics from the prestigious Nigerian premier university, University of Ibadan (UI), thus I can boldly tell you that I have sat on the same seats, and did receive lectures in the same lecture halls many great Nigerian icons like Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose and his twin, Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo; Prof. Oluwole Akinwande (popularly known as Prof. Wole Soyinka); Chinua Achebe (known for his widely read book “Things Fall Apart”); the great writer, activist and T.V producer, late Ken Saro-Wiwa; Prof. Emeritus of Physics, Alexander Obiefoka Enukora Animalu, and many others did. In a nutshell, I think I have succeeded in introducing you to an icon in the making, a LINGUIST, ergo one of my hobbies is studying.
OTHER HOBBIES:
I think hobbies, to me, are just things that give us pleasure doing them or events/activities we enjoy engaging ourselves in, regardless of one’s professionalism or amateurism at it; not gift(s) as may be confused or mistaken for — I enjoy watching and playing football (soccer), swimming, listening to great songs (of a few genres), sound production. A few female friends have called me boring because I would not go to the cinemas, but I enjoy watching movies, the action genres where every thing is blown up; with disturbing sounds effects of guns, propellers, car tires screeching, etc.
In contrast to hobbies, I can say I possess some but very few heavenly bestowals which are rarely displayed. We do NOT wear our best clothes often, especially as kids (they are meant for special events), neither do we get to eat our favorite meals often, except on certain occasions.
Arts - Close friends, ex class and course-mates would tell you this is what I am very good at; drawing, and painting works of arts.
Soccer - I used to be excellent on the football (soccer) field; but circumstances sometimes warrant giving up our passion for certain things. I would not take it that I departed from a dream, it is an evident fact that priorities change as we grow up.
Music - As much as I still get a hold of the pencil at intervals, and still kick the ball with the kids in the neighborhood, one thing that can NOT be “easily” dispositioned (i.e. gotten rid of) from me is MUSIC. Music, they say, says all the things that words alone can not deliver; and as humans, we always have things to say and on occasions need a better way to express them, and hence I think it would be “music and me”, at least for a while. So, once more, meet a record producer, singer, and song writer, SCIRYL.
CAREER and NAME
The name SCIRYL (pronounced as “cereal”) generated from the backwards spelling of the plural noun word “lyrics”; like a Bentley on a reverse motion.
I grew up listening to artistes like the late 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G., and Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones, known by his stage name Nas, who was and remains my favorite rapper. These dudes, alongside Jay Z, Eminem, Dr. Drey, Outcast, the late Big Pun and a few other “rap” artistes really transmitted a special force to my drowsy gift which I did not know was there, not to mention could be brought to life — it is funny how we often take or spend much out of our little time trying stupid things, and the stupidest thing I ever did (as a kid) was writing down lyrics of these artistes while their songs play on radio tapes, substituting their words/lyrics with mine; a “pause” and “play” process”. Of course, you might want to imagine how much time was spent doing this. Literally, that was the awakening of Sciryl.
TIME FACTORS
It has taken years, been underground dealing with issues, most of which required wise and careful decisions and steps but deciding to dive exhaustively into the music scene as a career entertainer now is somewhat an upsurge/intensification of a reaction that has occurred within me over the years and, like a biochemical weapon, the reaction is to be felt.
Sometimes, few would qualify you as being “proud” already following how you brand yourself, but there are decisions we all have made a time in our lives that we can actually look back on how hard it was we wanted to give up, and now realize it was worth the sacrifice(s). I have made sacrifices, I have paid a lot of dues and, very interestingly, it turns out I have just invested my time to come up with this write up. So, on a final note, I introduce to you a Linguist who goes by the name Abiodun (a.k.a SCIRYL), and who on this day chooses to be the newest Steemian around.
