**Vintage Electronic Musician joins Steemit Community**

in #introduceyourself4 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians, my name is Gene Roley. I'm an Electronic Musician, who loves all things to do with synthesizers, and I'm very pleased to "IntroduceMyself" to the Steemit community.

As a high school teenager in the 1970's, I became aware of a relatively new electronic musical instrument called a synthesizer. I was heading to class one fateful day and was passing by the school auditorium. I heard strange, wonderful sounds emanating from inside. I decided to skip my next class and ventured into the auditorium to investigate.

A classmate was demonstrating his Minimoog synthesizer. The first thing I noticed was all of the cool looking knobs and switches. they were divided into sections with high tech names like Oscillator Bank, Mixer, Modifiers, and Filter.

I certainly was impressed by the looks of this machine, but what really blew me away were the sounds this instrument was capable of producing. Some sounds reminded me of traditional musical instruments, others were interesting musical timbres I had never heard before. And then, an ear to ear grin spread across my entire face when I heard the Minimoog producing sound effects like wind and thunder as well as science fiction space sounds. Without a doubt, I knew synthesizers were the musical instruments that I wanted to learn to play.

It took a couple of years until I was finally able to purchase my first synth: An ARP Odyssey. I happily spent many hours conjuring weird sounds from the depths of that wonderful musical instrument.

Well, the years have flown by and I'm an old guy now; but, synthesizers have remained my favorite musical instrument and I've been having lots of fun with them for more than 40 years now.

So much for the quick blast from my past. Back to the present.

What do I hope to gain from Steemit? I would like to communicate with other electronic musicians, hear their music, and talk about the synths and other gear they are using. And, of course, enjoy any good stories they may have.

What can I give the Steemit Electronic Music community in return? Well, I don't pretend to be a musical genius or a synthesizer guru; but, synthesizers have been an integral part of my life for more than 4 decades and I have spent myriad hours playing around with them. I was around when Wendy Carlos was Walter Carlos and the album Switched on Bach had just hit the record stores. I was around when the Minimoog came out. I was around before MIDI. I went to the local music stores and drooled on the DX7 and the D50 when they were brand new, state of the art synths. In short, I bring old school experience, history, and maybe a few funny stories to share with those who are interested.

Furthermore, and this could be the most important part, I hope to pique the curiosity of non-musician Steemians and demonstrate to them what incredible musical instruments synthesizers are and guide them to some free synthesizer music they might really enjoy!

So, please allow me the pleasure of taking you on a fun musical journey, designed to give you a glimpse into the incredible world of synthesizers and the amazing sounds and music that they are capable of creating. For the most satisfying musical experience, headphones are recommended.

Let's start your journey with a synthesizer fantasy. A wicked sorcerer has cast an evil spell, taking all who dwell in the Enchanted Forest captive. Fortunately, after an epic battle, the heroine overcomes the evil sorcerer and returns peace and tranquility to the Enchanted Forest.

Next, strap yourself tightly into your interstellar spacecraft and allow me to show you some of the other-worldly, ambient, sci-fi sounds a synthesizer produces when it gets Lost in Space.

Finally, let's revisit a popular classical piece written by Johann Sebastian Bach entitled Bourree in E minor and see what happens when you take a simple Baroque era piece written for the lute or harpsichord and let a few synthesizers have fun with it.

Thanks for sticking with me this far. I plan to link my other YouTube videos to the Steemit Electronic Music community started by greencross.

In the meantime, check out my YouTube channel

Finally, I hope you have liked what you have heard so far and that you will Follow me and allow me to share my synthesizer compositions with you in the future.

Best Wishes Always, Gene Roley
