Hi, I’m Marilia, from lots of places

As I was thinking about this “introduceyourself” post, I
thought about the article I just sent in. The nice editor (I’m lucky with them,
I have great editors) asked me if he could change the title. He mentioned that
people in the USA wouldn’t be willing to click on a title containing the words “open
veins”.

I had to laugh. I live here for a long time, lived here on
and off practically all my life and it didn’t occur to me that this reference
to an old book only makes sense in my other identity: the Latino one.

The Latino Agency, where I volunteer as facilitator at the support group "charlas"

There’s a book written in 1973 by Eduardo Galeano called “The
Open Veins of Latin America” http://library.uniteddiversity.coop/More_Books_and_Reports/Open_Veins_of_Latin_America.pdf
(“Las Venas Abiertas de América Latina” https://static.telesurtv.net/filesOnRFS/news/2015/04/13/las_venas_abiertas_de_amxrica_latina.pdf
). It was part of the article as I explained that the book shaped the
perception of at least two generations of Latin American students, scholars,
activists, priests, doctors, journalists and others about the Continent.

I am a Latino. I was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Now,
apparently, I live forever in the USA. But hey, considering what my life has
been, “forever” doesn’t have that much credibility.

I discovered Steemit by chance, reading about the changes in
social media in general. I created this account not expecting anything. It was
(maybe is) supposed to be an experiment, like most of the things I do. Some
work, some don’t. I posted this on Twitter and surprisingly got over a 20 welcome
replies and a dozen offers for help. And look, they are following me.

I don’t plan, at least for now, to focus on one single subject.
I know I can automatically repost articles from my blog (http://www.mariliacoutinho.com) here,
so you should probably expect many posts on health-related issues, especially
strength training.

One of the things that are happening now is that I am
reconnecting with my academic past. I’ve been asked to write and talk about
Latin America (I taught Latin American studies), so there’s that. But mostly, I’ve
been asked to explain “how science works”. The bulk of my life has been
dedicated to science, from identifying membrane protein receptors right up to coordinating
science and technology policy research. So, I may, or may not, formally
reconnect with Academia. Academia is like family: you may leave, migrate to
another country, speak a different language, but you always belong there.

I write evidence-based articles on health and training: that’s
what I do for a living. I published a few books, most not on this topic and I
have a few waiting for me to undo my present state of anal-cranial inversion.

I’ve been an athlete (lifter), pretty good one, won a couple
of world titles and set some world records and I’m not sure if I am that any
more. For now, let’s just keep it at “it’s complicated”. I wrote a lot about
that.

I studied a lot of different things to get to this point, “this
point” being old age. I majored in biology (with what you guys here would call
a minor in chemistry), got a MS in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in sociology. Then
back to sports science.

Some people like to read what I write and that’s most of
what I will share here, although I also take horrible pictures of birds and streets
at the OKC Latino Quarter: I have stories about each one of them.
