The Agile Charade

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

This is the true story... of seven strangers... picked to work in a bullpen... (physical or distributed) and have their lives recorded in JIRA and Slack (insert your tools of choice)... to find out what happens... when people stop being polite... and start getting Agile...The Agile World.

So, cheesy Real World spoof aside...the reason I'm launching this account is to create a medium for current (and aspiring) Agilists to share ideas from all perspectives whether as Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Development team members, or even folks in the leadership hierarchy responsible for supporting Scrum teams. By the way, this isn't limited to software development shops - if you have stuff to do and a team, I'm convinced that you probably have something to learn from and/or contribute to the community.

I'm 15 years into my career having lived through Waterfall as a Project Manager, process improvement as a Six Sigma Black Belt, and Agile transformation as a Scrum Master, people manager, and wannabe Agile Coach. After recently jumping back into the job seeker pool and chatting with numerous companies falsely claiming that they're "Agile," I became inspired to reach out and see how widespread the charade really is when it comes to companies claiming Agility. Have I stumbled upon a statistical anomaly in my 8 week (and counting) job hunt, or is false Agile cred rampant these days?

If you have ever worked at a place claiming to be Agile and found yourself engulfed in Agile anti-patterns (i.e., top-down, value-blind decision-making, surface-level, low-trust team member relationships, traditional project managers being traditional project managers with a Scrum Master title, etc.), I want to hear your stories. My intent is to start out posting recommended practices to address some of the most nagging topics in this space that I’ve observed as impediments to organizations moving to Agile, but it would be flippin’ sweet if fellow Agilists could jump in on the comments with topics of their own – I’ll do my best to weigh in with new posts as they come in. From here on out, feel free to call me Mo – the pie in the sky objective here is to make the world a Mo-Agile place for all. Thanks in advance for your support and brain power!
