3 Important Things For Noobs On Steemit (That most likely nobody tells you about)

in #introduceyourself6 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemtribe,
even though this post is mostly aimed at making life a bit easier for Steemit newbies, I'm sure there are also some more seasoned users that can use the following info.

So, you just signed up to Steemit, finished your basic account setup and start exploring. You follow a few people, resteem a post or two and write your first post yourself. After a few hours you wonder if someone actually followed back or even esteemed your post. You instinctively start looking for your notification tab that you are used to from other social media platforms but no matter how hard you look you don't find them. Maybe you even ask yourself if you made a mistake by signing up in the first place. But trust me, you didn't. Yes, Steemit might be overwhelming in the beginning and lacking a few features (for now) that we are used to from the dark overlords of Facebook, etc., but it's the better choice because it's way less abusive.

Nevertheless it can be annoying to look at your followers, which might be well over a hundred already thanks to dozens of spam accounts, just to find out that all the listed usernames are in alphabetical order. No indication of your most recent followers to follow them back. Grrrr. And no way at all to see of someone esteemed your posts at all. Double grrrr. But there's help.

So let's dig into what you can do to get around these obstacles, and it's as easy as bookmarking one or two URLs, depending on what works best for you.

Method 1) This is the easiest solution, unless there's something I'm not aware of, and all you have to do is go to your blog page and swap the 'it' of steemit in the URL with 'db', so instead of steemit it will read steemdb.

Steemit URL.jpg
SteemDB URL.jpg

This will get you to a screen looking like that, and you will find a lot of other insight and stats of your Steemit account.

SteemDB.jpg

When you click on the social tab you see that it will show your most recent followers in chronological order. Steemdb should suffice most users and the only reason I show you another solution is that steemdb sometimes times out with an error message when I click on the followers tab.

Method 2) Follow this link: https://steem.makerwannabe.com

You will be taken to the screen below and after entering your username you will be able to see who followed you within the specified time period. Furthermore you have the option to see your post's resteems.

While all of the above features are important for us in terms of popularity, section two of this post talks about the very important issue of your blog's security. When people sign up for a Steemit account they will be advised to diligently protect their master password, also referred to as Master Key or owner's key. Because through the nature of a website running on blockchain site owners do not store their users passwords, which makes the whole system less vulnerable to be hacked and identities being stolen. This in turn puts more responsibility on the users to keep their credentials safe, and it's being stressed out a lot for bloggers to store their Master Key offline, and preferably even non digital. If you lose you Master Key your account is toast and whoever retrieves it can assume your identity as a Steemit user.

While the Master Key's importance receives a lot of emphasis, it is not really made clear enough that there are other keys you can use to operate on the Steemit platform. There are also the Posting Key and the Active Key. For them to be changed you need the Master Key but other than that you will be fine with the Active and Posting Keys to run your Steemit blog. You can use the Active Key to log into your account which means less exposure of your Master Key.

In order to retrieve your Active and Posting Keys you click on your wallet tab on the right side of the screen. As shown below the wallet links you to a page with a sub menu which shows a permissions tab.

Permissions.jpg

Clicking the permissions tab will reveal another page that shows you all your different keys.

Keys.jpg

Clicking on the tabs to the right of the keys will bring you to the real thing, which you then should copy and use for your everyday tasks on Steemit. If you've been logging into your account with your Master Key I suggest you log out and sign in again with your posting key in order to keep your Master Key offline as much as possible.

Hope that was helpful, and if so, please don't forget upvote and resteem.

Thanks for reading and happy and safe blogging.

Welcome to Steem Community @mushroomdreams! As a gentle reminder, please keep your master password safe. The best practise is to use your private posting key to login to Steemit when posting; and the private active key for wallet related transactions.

In the New Steemians project, we help new members of steem by education and resteeeming their articles. Get your articles resteemed too for maximum exposure. You can learn more about it here: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gaman/new-steemians-project-launch

Thank you for repeating to me what I said in my post :-)

if you have questions do not hesitate to ask me and you can find answers in https://steemit.com/faq.html

Well, as promised, I just came to read your post.

In fact, I say I found a couple good tips to work here. I certainly see I have 170 followers, and I'm sure 99.99% of them are just spam accounts (if not 100% :s), so now taking Method 1 to check how it works :)
Thank you!

Hi, thanks for your responses and actually taking the time to read the post, lol. When it comes to those annoying spam accounts I started to mute them. Not that there will be any of their garbage posts on your timeline, since you don't follow them back, but at least this way you can easily identify them when you look at your followers list. Now you can easier see how many true followers you have. It's a pain in the ass, I know, but that spam storm hits only new accounts, it quickly tapers off.
That's just human nature unfortunately, as soon as money is involved all the scam artists and parasites try to hop a ride, but I think on Syeemit the good still outweighs the bad. So, good luck my friend, hope you will be doing well here. Peace and light.

Thanks for the above info, It's very helpful.
However I think there's a slight mistake in it.

"I suggest you log out and sign in again with your active key in order to keep your Master Key offline as much as possible."

Shouldn't that be your "Posting key" for posting, commenting etc. and your "Active key" for any activity related to your account like transfers of tokens in your wallet, make profile changes etc.

In fact Steemit won't allow me to use my active key unless I'm in a page (such as the wallet) which requires it in order to do any manipulation.

upvoted/resteemed

Oh I didn't realise it was yourself LOL.

Busted! And you're totally right - and apparently they only one who read the dang thang - I did something recently on Steam Connect where they require the active key, and I got mixed up. Thanks for catching that, and for uprooting /resteeming. I appreciate it my friend.

This post has been so helpful thank you! It's a shame there isn't a way yet to save posts on Steemit ones of value, like mark as favourite or bookmark etc, maybe in future. For now will bookmark. Thank you

Hi,

I'm glad you find it helpful. I'm relatively new here as well, so it's still fresh in my memory how it feels like to poke around like a madman and trying to find stuff that's not there.
What I usually do when I want to seep access to a post I find valuable, I just resteem it. This way it's on my timeline, plus others my find it as well when they visit my blog, plus I support the original author of the post. This way everybody wins, that's the whole concept of Steemit.

Hope you prosper here, don't hesitate to ask when you get stuck with something.
Cheers

Amazing idea! Thank you very much for all your help much appreciated :)

Hey Mushroom. Where did you go? I hope you haven't left us. I'll really miss you and your super art if you leave.

Thanks buddy, I mean thanks for reaching out and for actually noticing that I went awol for a while. Yea, it's just the stuff we talked about previously, that this platform can be so frustrating and such a waste of time.
I just posted something but haven't really made up my mind if I should call it the quits. I'll leave my page up but don't know if this place is worth putting more energy into. The results are just so not happening. I do appreciate your support very much and don't wanna miss our occasional chat here.

Well It's great to hear from you and to know you're OK.
Yea.. as you know I agree this place is pretty lame especially if we expect to get any fame or fortune out of it and of course it gets even worse as the price of Steem keeps dropping.

It's my contention that it was designed on a kind of socialist Keynesian model, with an inflationary currency (which constantly looses value) instead of a deflationary currency like Bitcoin etc. (which inherently does the opposite).

I was writing an article about this (I put up a short post called "Bitcoin and Deflation"
https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@amd64/bitcoin-and-deflation ) but just as I was about to post it the power went down and I lost it, and haven't got around to trying to recreate it.

I'm pretty good at understanding economics and predicted the rise of Bitcoin right from the beginning but because of technical issues didn't manage to get some till it was nearly $200 but I've done all right so far:)

I'll probably recreate that post again though I'm not sure if there's much point in doing it.
For one I doubt if anyone who could do anything about it would ever get to read and understand it. And even if they did I imagine have great difficulty getting a consensus to make the changes to the currency I suggest.

Do you post on any other platform/s? I'd like to keep in touch if you do leave here. I was thinking of emailing you through your website if that's OK? There's other things too e.g.

I'm listening to all the oldies but goodies from the early 60s onwards. They all sound pristine and it's absolutely thrilling to listen to them on this little "Speaker" called a "Sardine" which only costs 15-20$ and even though it's a smallish sound it gets right through to you.
I got it here: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Portable-10W-Powerful-Wireless-Bluetooth-Stereo-Speaker-Support-FM-Alarm-TF-USB/262420302449?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
But you could proly find it anywhere, and I could send you bunches of mp3s to put on a usb stick or SD card and it will play them one after another continuously for days.
I want everyone I know to experience this. It's fantastic.

I could go on but I better leave it at that for now.

Hey mang, thank you for this elaborate message. I did not know you understand economics so well, because even though I was pretty good at math, making me understand how wall street and the money market works is like trying to explain to someone the smell of the color nine. Maybe it's all the political bullshit surrounding it that creates this block in my brain. I always had the impression that the whole banking system is built on deception and fraud, and wouldn't even work if not some parts of the world and the population were kept artificially poor and struggling.
I read your article and it's the first time I heard of a deflationary system, still have no clue how it would work, but just the fact that it's being badmouthed by the parasitic puppet masters shows me that it must be the right way to go.

Regarding the oldies, I hafta admit that I don't have the endurance to listen to this for a prolonged period of time. Once in a blue moon I need my 70s or 60s fix but that usually only lasts somewhere between a few hours to several days. A month back i had a Golden Earring phase which lasted a solid 2 days. I'm more into electronica, reggae and alternative rock from the 90s. One of my fav bands from that time is Garbage. I've been also dabbling in blues occasionally, Gary Clark jr. is pretty high on my list. Then there's new wave from the 80s of course, Tears For Fears, Icehouse, etc, every now and then I get a heavy dose of that stuff.

And yes, I have the usual social media setup, @mushroomdreamsart for instagram for example, we can start with that if you have an account there. I most likely stick around here, though and you can always email me thru my website. Whatever is easiest, I even subscribed to discord but haven't really used it.

So long my friend, tha-tha-that's all for today.
