The ketogenic diet is a special type of very low carb diet where we get most of our energy from fat. While that may sound unhealthy, fat is not actually bad for you. The low-fat craze actually caused our current diabetes epidemic. Both fat and protein have things our body needs, but carbs don't! So we keto people cut most of them out, and as a result we lose weight, stop diabetes progression, and usually improve our bloodwork in the process.
