2018 IPL Auction saw some surprise picks, while some big names missed the bus. A total of 169 players were auctioned and of which 56 were overseas players. Some of the big buys in this season’s IPL were Ben Stokes (INR 12.5 crores), Jaydev Unadkat (11.5), Manish Pandey and KL Rahul (11), Chris Lynn (9.6) and Mitchell Starc (9.4). Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell and Rashid Khan were picked by Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 9 crores each. Chris Gayle would have gone unsold had Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) not picked him for his base price during the third round of unsold players.

However, the other big names who went unsold were Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Hashim Amla, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Shaun Marsh, Martin Guptill, Travis Head, Dale Steyn, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, among others.

Apart from Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Zadran was sold to KXIP for 4 crores. As Preity Zinta said, “He has been an interesting talent and a bit of a mystery, so we went for him.”

Nepal, too, had all the reasons to celebrate as Sandeep Lamichanne was picked by DD for base price 20 lakhs. He will be the first Nepal player to represent an IPL franchise.
