On the evening of October 1st local time, Iran launched a large-scale missile attack on Israel.
Iran stated that the attack was in retaliation for the death of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps "targeting important military security objectives in Israel and firing dozens of ballistic missiles." Some Iranian media disclosed that hypersonic ballistic missiles were used for the first time in this attack. The Israeli military reported that, based on preliminary estimates, Iran launched 180 "missiles," resulting in at least one death and several injuries.
According to reports from CNN and the Times of Israel, shortly thereafter, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu held a cabinet meeting in a secure bunker near Jerusalem and delivered a video address, stating that Iran "made a big mistake and will pay the price."
"Tonight, Iran again fired hundreds of missiles at Israel but failed," Netanyahu told the Israeli public. "Israel's air defense system is the most advanced in the world, thus thwarting this attack. I congratulate the Israel Defense Forces on their remarkable achievements." He particularly thanked the United States for its support of Israel's defense efforts.
Netanyahu then warned, "Iran made a big mistake tonight and will pay the price for it." He vowed revenge.
He further threatened, "The Iranian regime does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our resolve to retaliate against enemies. But Hamas leaders like Sinwar did not understand this before, nor did Hezbollah leader Nasrallah. Now, there may be some in Tehran who do not understand it either. They will understand. We will uphold the rules we have set: whoever attacks us, we will attack them." Netanyahu stated that the airstrikes were "thwarted" and threatened to make Iran "pay the price for its mistake."
