This Messenger's Statement Really Happened
"Will your people make idolatry after you, O Messenger of God?"
Shaddad bin Aus had seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so gloomy and dismayed, when Shaddad questioned his anger, he proclaimed that fearing his people would do shirk and follow lust. Looking at the circumstances of friends at the time, the Prophet's worries of shalallahu 'alaihi wa sallam were somewhat surprising for Shaddad, so he asked further, "Will your people commit idolatry again after you, O Messenger of God?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) replied, "O Shaddad, they will not worship the sun, statues or stones, but they show off their deeds to others."
Shaddad said, "Riya, is that shirk, O Messenger of God?"

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Yes, someone fasted, then exhibited to him one of the lust of the world, then he breaks. Allah says of them, 'Most of them do not believe in Allah, but they are idolators.'Hah man, shun away this kind of shirk, because he is softer than the grains of sand.'
